I think there are just some people who are so used to the Sox reeling from disaster to disaster (see H. Vickery's law), that they can't accept that maybe a new day has dawned. Of course, he could be right. There are still 158 games to go. Anything can happen, even a repeat of 1961. It's just awfully premature to make any kind of parallels.

At least we can continue to make fun of him for his lame dark cloud act.

In the end …

The 1961 Sox, helped by a run of 19 victories in 20 games during June, finished 86-76, in fourth place, 23 games behind the mighty Mantle/Maris Yankees.

The 2007 Sox could finish fourth too. With the talent they have, they also could finish first.

But if their record ever gets to 19-33, it'll be time to cue "The Twilight Zone" theme.

Seriously Bob, ****.

White Sox Forecast-by Bob Vanderberg

Bob Vanderberg, Trib editor, author, and White
Sox fan from way back, shares his predictions
for the next few years of Sox-cess!

It doesn't look good at all, fellow Sox fans.
That famous quote from Dante's Inferno
"Abandon hope, all ye who enter here" certainly
fits. They should put it in big letters above the
concourse gates at the Cell.

The White Sox will be bad for the next two years,
even though they'll finish above .500. They will
trade their shortstop, who will then curse them
to 46 more years without a pennant.

They will rebuild with pitching, but fall
agonizingly short of the Yankees. 2010
will be the worst. They'll fall just one game
short.

It'll only get worse from there. Ozzie will quit
and be replaced by Eddie Stanky, who'll lose
the 2013 pennant in the last week.

After that, more doom. Chicago will become a
Cub town, the Sox won't draw flies, and by 2016
they will lose 106 games and draw less than
500,000 fans!! And by 2021 Danny Kaye will be
looking to buy them and move them to Seattle!!!
Oh, woe! Oh, misery!! Oh, despair!!! Why did God
put me on the earth to suffer this? Why....

Cubs Led The Way To Racial Harmony In Chicago
Jackie Robinson, Ernie Banks, Billie Williams & other African-American players were warmly welcomed by the racially diverse, open-minded Northside fans.

IF you think this is far-fetched, then read the articles in the Sunday Cubune. Two articles about the declining presence of African-Americans in MLB, fine. Nice picture of a true hero, Jackie Robinson, at The Shrine.

Then the Fred Mitchell column, "Robinson an inspiration to Cub greats." Here's the passing reference to the man who broke the color barrier in Chicago baseball, Minnie Minoso,

"Minnie Minoso was one of the first players to come over (1949)..."

I know you'll find this hard to believe, but the Cubune did not acknowledge the White Sox as the first Chicago MLB team to have a black player (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_first_black_Major_League_Baseball_players_ by_team_and_date) and the first to have an African-American player. Minoso broke in with the Sox in May of 1951. On the other hand, the Cubs followed the Sox lead when at the end of the 1953 season (September 15th) Banks debuted with the Cubs.

No mention of the fact that blacks, according to some, were NOT allowed into Wrigley until Jackie Robinson played his first game there. Apparently after that first game though African-Americans were still not welcome at The Shrine. "Yes it's North and South, but it's also racial. [B]My Dad tried to go see Jackie Robinson in 1948 and was turned away. He vowed he would never go see the Cubs play again. We'd take the L to Comiskey 20 times a year. But Wrigley might as well have been in Minneapolis." -- Michael Wilbon Chicago native, St. Joseph's high school graduate and oddly considering his experience a Cubbie fan.

No mention of the fact that Sox Park (Comiskey Park) was home to the Negro League All-Star games. No mention of the fact that blacks DID in fact attend Sox games, well before Jackie's first game at The Shrine, as this 1930's Sun-Times picture documents:

That first African-American was Sam Hairston, albeit a brief tenure with the Sox.

I think this splitting of blacks into African-Americans and African-Cuban (or whatever the current PC term) is a bit silly, in a historical context. Because I can't imagine that to racists it matter much if the "black" was born here or not. In my understanding the issue was primarily skin color, not place of birth.

By the way, as long as Mitchell is writing a feature on his favorite team
and their contributions to black baseball history, what say we get an
article about Minnie Minoso and Larry Doby from Sox guy Bob Vanderberg?
Surely he's the one to write such an article. It would serve us much better
than the gutless, whiny bull**** he's been shoveling at us lately, which
amounts to "because the 1961 White Sox sucked 2 years after winning
a pennant, the 2007 Sox will suck, too." How about it?

By the way, three major league racial barriers fell at Comiskey Park:

Larry Doby-Cleveland Indians July 5, 1947 (first in AL, of course)
Minnie Minoso-White Sox May 1, 1951 (first in Chicago, not that the Trib..etc)
Elijah "Pumpsie" Green-Boston Red Sox July 21, 1959 (last of the 16 teams to integrate)

UMPS DECLARE WAR ON EX-CUBS
Blown calls jeopardize Hairston, Sosa comebacks, Santo cries conspiracy; Sammy makes history
White Sox win despite disputed calls by umps

Chicago- Sammy Sosa made history today by becoming the only current active ex-cub to be part of two no-hitters, one in 1991 against Baltimore, the other yesterday as a member of the Texas Rangers. He and teammate Jerry Hairston, Jr., also an ex-cub (for whom he was traded for), were victimized by bogus calls that illegitimized the pitching exploits of the starting pitcher for the opposing team.

Meanwhile, cub legend Ron Santo, fresh off another undeserved snub by HOF voters, correctly noted that MLB umpires have a vendetta against ex-cubs. 'They were safe, they know it, I know it, we all know it. You can never keep a cub down forever.', Santo lameneted.

The article currently on that rag's website actually mentiones Ligue and Dybas by name & the date each ran onto the field. OVER FOUR YEARS AGO. But omits any mention of fans who have run onto the field at Cub Park in the last 4 years, including the guy who did so a couple of weeks ago.

Former Cub legend hits milestone home run, cementing a legacy he dearly wanted to leave. Hall of Fame next?

Thomas hits 500
Former Sox player lamabasted as "idiot" gets to goal he selfishly set for himself.

Sullivan: You heard Williams, stupid people. Thomas is an idiot.

Rogers: Thomas griped and moaned constantly. Sox couldn't take any more.

This describes the media's coverage of the '05 Sox vs. this year's Cubs to a T.

Lest we forget, the '05 Sox won 99 games, were wire-to-wire in first place, and had the best record in the AL....and still all we heard in the media was how the Sox weren't that good, were destined to choke, and - if by some miracle they actually made the postseason - would likely have a quick exit in the ALDS round because they "can't beat any good teams" and were only racking up wins against bad teams.

Funny how we're not hearing that talk from those Cub-lovers this year. Oh, by the way, if the Cubs were in any other NL division, they'd be 7 games out and 5 games out of the wild card. In the AL, they'd be at least 10 games out of any division and 7 games out of the wild card....and they do seem to have a knack for dropping 2 out of 3 to good teams. But, woohoo....Cubbies all the way baby!!!!!

That is soooo true! What is the Cubbies record against teams with winning records this season? If it's been reported, I've missed it. I know they've lost recent series to the Dodgers and Arizona.

If the Cubbies fail to win the unbelievably weak NL Central this season with their HUGE salary, isn't that a HUGE choke? So where are the choke stories?

In a petition signed by millions of Cub Fans around the world it was decided that the 2007 playoffs are not necessary as Cub fans guarantee the Cubbies would win the whole thing anyway. In any given season, a winning streak of 2+ games results in the same guarantee by Cub fans that the World Series will be won by the Lovable Losers. Commissioner Bud Selig was convinced that this would be the case in 2007 and by skipping any postseason play, Major League Baseball would save millions of dollars that would be better spent refilling the depleted supply of HGH and Flax Seed Oil for 2008.

Pg 1-39: CUBS, CUBS, CUBS!!!!!
- Cubs Compared to '06 NFC Champ Bears, '85 Super Bowl Bears, and 6 time champ Bulls.

Pg 40 (under legal notices): Sox Sign Thug Pierzynski to 2 yr Deal
- 3 more seasons of AJ playing dirty against the Cubs in the Crosstown Classic.

Sun-Times Op-Ed by Father Greeley:
God Rewards Cubs, Smites Sox Fan Scum.
The Cubs success this year shows that Jesus hates Sox fans as much as I do. Any good Christian would know that all Cub fans are wonderful and the Sox fan base is filled with a bunch of low-lifes.

- 2005 Completely Undone. It never happened, Cub fans!

Foul-up in '03 is history
Cubs' collapse in Game 6 of NLCS, many of its faces, just distant memories

You already got the McGrath Trophy. So instead we'll toss in a Ann Marie Lipinski award for predicting her revisionist spin one full-day before it actually happened.

2000: A look back
In 2000, the White Sox made the ALDS, only to be out-managed and swept out by a Lou Piniella team. Can the Lou Piniella-led Cubs sweep the first round?

2005:

The Sox are up 2-0, will they collapse and lose like the 1984 Cubs?

2007:

The Cardinals won it all last year with an 83-78 record. Can the Cubs do it this year?

Hitmen77 just has that knack for calling it. Either that, or the Trib browses this thread for headline and story ideas.

Funny how in 2005 we were treated to season-long comparisons to the
1969 Cubs, then when the Sox were up 2-0 on Boston, comparisons to
the 1984 Cubs. Now for the Cubs 2003 is a "distant memory" and history
won't play any type of role for them in 2007.

Sox cheat again!
They knew they'd miss the playoffs the next two years, so they traded Rowand and Iguchi to Phillies so they could help another undeserving team get to the playoffs! Coincidence? We think not!

They're just too predictable. Sometimes it's like shooting fish in a barrel. That and I'm secretly seeking employment with the Tribune Company.
