I was just wondering. Has there been any word on John Danks' Jersey number?

Is he going to pull a Barry Zito and wear a high number (67) or is he going to get a more appropriate jersey number?

Thanks for posting!! and GO WHITE SOX....GET THEM INJUNS ON OPENING DAY!!!

After checking his minor league page, he was No. 15 in the minors. Since, 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, 55 (Molina's number, I believe), are already taken, maybe he goes up to 65?

I predict he scraps the 5, and takes No. 26.

His number will be 1-99, exclusive of numbers already assigned to other players.

That's a good prediction right there. Hopefully there's still some of El Duque's mojo still working in that jersey number.

26 was given to Andy Gonzalez. They generally don't give away numbers to guys that would possibly come up during the season because it's in the media guide, and so forth.

Since Eduardo Perez was released, I would guess Danks will get #41--which is also a good DMB song.

35 is also available.

Based on the clubhouse picture posted, it looks like Molilna is getting 55. Maybe that guy that posted the pictures can find out.

Don't think appropriate is the right word choice, you make it sound like there's something wrong with choosing a high jersey number. Both Zito and Fisk have the most memorable jersey numbers in the history of the game.

Buerhle has a high number, worked out well for him. I wouldn't be shocked if Danks keeps a high number.

Well, it's certainly OK to choose whatever number you want; it's just that numbers over 59 seem to lack character and command less respect, just because those are the numbers assigned to minor league players in camp. Fisk chose 72 because he was 27 in Boston, and I don't know what Zito's reasoning was, but I'm sure it was legitimate. Both of them were all-stars, so they don't need a low number to command respect. Then again, it's a personal choice.

Zito chose 75 because he liked how it looked on the jersey with his name above it. He's a flake.

Terrero, and since he accepted his minor league assignment, he'll probably keep it.

I guess, but IMO, if you're not on the 40-man, you dont get to keep your number.

I think a lot of it also has to do with high school and colleges do not allow high numbers in most cases. Players tend to keep the same number throughout their playing career.

I don't consider 56 a high number. Anything over 60-65, IMO. The Sox have never had a guy with a number higher than 72.

Wasn't Tony Phillips 73?

Yeah, Zito said the 75 makes a nice mantle for his name to sit on. It looks good that way to him.

Right. Zito has said in interviews he liked how 75 made a nice line under his name.

I believe 55 would also do the same thing, as would 57.

I'm surprised he didn't take 420.

Yes, Fisk chose 72 because it was the inverse of his 27 in Boston and also because it was the year his son was born. Zito said his reasoning is because the number formed a nice "shelf" under his name.

Plus if he gets traded to another team, the chances are he will not have to shell out a ransom to get the number from another player. It would more than likely be available.

But I see what the poster meant. High numbers are usually used for minor-leaguers and non-roster invitees.

But Mitch Williams had 99, Bobby Thigpen 57, Goose Gossage 54, Garland/Contreras 52, Fisk 72, and Buerhle has 56.

I think once you get to 59 the numbers start to look a bit odd, and telling that you have a minor-leaguer just called up on the team.

Thiggy had 57 saves in 1990. He wore 37.

I was actually thinking of the 58 he wore when he first came up, and probably had the save record in my head. Thanks for the correction.
