Just in case Hall cannot play the rest of the 2007 season:whiner: , who do you think it shoud be? Weeky, Molina, or should we make a trade? Ken Williams said today that they will most likely go with someone within the organazation.

Molina, but I think Gonzalez will get the first shot.

I'd like to see a comparison of ST stats for Gonzalez and Molina.

Molina is 4-for-18 with a homer, which came against that very special, playoff-bound Cubbie team.

Wiki is 5-for-24.

I haven't seen enough of either to speak definitively, to be honest with you. I do like what I've seen of Molina.

Defense should be the defining factor in terms of who comes north.

Floyd. We need to get value out of him somehow, and clearly he shouldn't be allowed to pitch.

If Floyd does not agree to your proposition, then we should turn to Joe Mauer. Do you think the Twins would accept Floyd and Wiki Gonzalez for Mauer?

I thought we were worried about the Sox's ability to hit left-handed pitching. Now it appears the conversation has switched to one about defense. Which one are we trying to get: offense or defense?

Molina can call pitches, and handle catching Contreas, neither he nor Wiki has a plus arm. Donny Lucy is still to raw to call up, so I would guess that Molina will get the call.

Defense. We'd like to have offense, but that simply isn't realistic. Gonzalez and Molina aren't good hitters. Any backup catcher who is available through trade isn't going to be a good hitter. We have to take the best defensive guy and keep Perez on the team to help us against left-handed pitching, IMO.

But no to Javy Lopez. Defense is what is needed most for this position.

The Twins just sent Matt LeCroy down. He's got to be out of options. He'd be a good power bat behind the dish a few days a week.

I don't see him ever going behind the plate again. He was the Nationals third sting catcher last year and allowed 7 stolen bases to the Astros and Frank Robinson yanked him during the inning.

MIL just sent him to AAA. He played great for them last year, and as a former top prospect (along with being a former White Sox farmhand) he just might be a late bloomer.

Instead of languishing and wasting away in AAA, I think he would be a good pick up. It's also better than getting Alomar back or relying on some of the other career minor leaguers who are being mentioned.

Gonzalez has the experience edge, and his stats suggest he can handle hitting lefthanders, something A.J. struggles with...

Barring a trade or pickup, I'd look for him to win the backup job...

IIRC, Lou Gehrig (http://www.lougehrig.com/about/achievements.htm)was inducted into the HOF in 1939, which was the same year he last played. However, he was not playing games when he was inducted.

SoxFan64

Didn't Jim Palmer do that???

Palmer pitched spring training games after his induction to the HOF. But he re-retired during ST.

From wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Palmer):
1980s

Over the next six seasons he was hampered by arm fatigue and a myriad of minor injuries. He retired after the 1984 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_in_baseball) season, during which he was released by Baltimore. Seven years later, Palmer attempted to rejoin the Orioles as a non-roster invitee to spring training. After a struggling performance against the Red Sox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Red_Sox), he retired again citing a hamstring injury.

From Rotoworld...some possibilities.

Hall was hurt while playing out of position at first base on Sunday. With Chris Stewart traded to the Rangers, the internal options to replace him as A.J. Pierzynski's backup are Wiki Gonzalez and Gustavo Molina. Javy Lopez is available as a free agent, but he's said he doesn't want to be a backup. Former White Sox backup Chris Widger is also unemployed. Finally, there will be some guys available in trades, with Sal Fasano, Kelly Stinnett, Chad Moeller, Sandy Alomar Jr., Mike Rivera and Todd Pratt a few of the possibilities.

Nothing great, but some of these guys are pretty good vs. lefties and can play decent (certainly not great) defense. Not sure if they are much of an upgrade over Wiki though.

Well, if he could play through some discomfort once or twice a week from June 1 on that would be great. I'm guessing that with this latest news, KW will wait it out w/Wiki until we know more.

This means nothing. They figure he has nothing to lose if he waits it out since the recovery time from surgery puts him in ST 2008 either way.

Ask Kris Benson.....

Not necessarily. A catcher needs his arm, but not as much as a pitcher does. I don't think it's an apples-to-apples situation, comparing Hall to Kris Benson.

Somebody fill me in on this comparison.

Benson is done for the year. They thought they could rehab his torn up shoulder, but after a couple months of little progress, he had surgery. I think that's his story. We could be looking at the same situation with Hall.

Naturally, though, it's a different situation. Benson needs to be able to snap off sliders in order to return. If Hall can make a routine throw to second base and swing a bat without pain, he can return.

Wiki Gonzalez was sent down.

Gustavo Molina is the new backup for now.

Sisco, Aardsma, Floyd, and Logan going for the last two spots.

I agree on Logan. I think Aardsma is going to get the other spot over Floyd because at least David has a hard fastball to fall back on when he gets behind hitters. Floyd has nothing. Neither could get their breaking stuff over enough.

I don't think Sisco makes it because the Sox don't need 3 lefties. If Andy had been effective this spring it wouldn't matter, but he hasn't been good enough to set himself apart from anyone else, even Floyd.

They will go with Molina until they have a good idea of Hall's recovery can really be 80-90% by May. If in late April or early May that appears likely, then that will be the solution. If not, then they will go the trade route.

He's probably too green, but I think I'd rather see Donny Lucy there than Molina. Far more talent on both sides of the ball. He's a year or two from being completely ready, though.
