I think this is the right move. Floyd just didn't have the stuff to maintain as our fifth starter. Maybe after some work in AAA, he'll be okay. But, I'm excited to see that Danks will be with the team. Good luck to ya!

I might be alone here, but I like Gavins stuff. He had hard luck pitching in the rain yesterday where weve seen many a pitcher fail miserably, and up to then it was neck and neck.

I'm surprised. I figured they'd let Danks have at least another half year in the minors. I'm not upset at all with this - I trust OG/KW have seen a lot more of these guys and can make the decision much better than anyone.

Welcome to the Show John. I can't wait to see that curve live at USCF.

Perhaps but the Sox can't waste another game getting them each 4 innings and continue fighting for the job. They need to get that 5 guy as many innings as he can go.

What about most of his other appearances and his performance thus far in his major league career? Floyd is a stiff. Philadelphia realized it, they even played off the whole "all he needs is a change of scenery" garbage. Most other scouts knew it. Williams loved what he saw in the AFL and got too giddy. Ironically, he used Arizona as an excuse for Floyd's failings this spring.

aww the hell with, I was going to save this comment;

Just remember, KW said he wouldn't trade a starter unless the players helped the team in 2007.

So how does Gio in AA and Floyd with no options in AAA help out the 2007 White Sox?

I hope Danks is ready and can pitch like he did in spring training for the entire season. But I caution everyone that you are basing your Danks love on 16 innings of spring training pitching, probably half of which was against players who will spend 2007 in the minor leagues. If anything, I think this "appointment" shows just how little pitching depth the White Sox actually have. Think about it. Buerhle couldn't crack the White Sox rotation his rookie year, neither could McCarthy, and now Danks, who the majority of scouts will tell you needs a little more seasoning is opening the year in the rotation of a team that expects to contend for a world championship. Time will tell, but I think its a lock the White Sox use more starting pitchers in 2007 than they did in 2005 or 2006.

Payroll. It would have been nice if KW got someone to help this season, and I'm sure we will hear countless times for him how close Floyd is to becoming an elite pitcher, but it probably isn't going to happen. I like Gio, and in the long run this trade will most likely look fine, but looks can be deceiving. If Danks or whoever else is the fifth starter struggle this year and the Sox miss the playoffs by a couple of games, and Garcia does well or McCarthyfor that matter, KW's trades will be bad. I know the payroll went up a bit with guys getting raises, but I was pretty shocked they didn't use at least some of the savings the Garcia trade provided on someone who would be a lock to be on 2007's roster.

chisox59
03-24-2007, 10:33 PM
I'm optimistic. It gives us more balance to our starting rotation with a second lefthander. We all know how important lefthanded pitching is in our division. Floyd was all but given the 5th starter position with the trade and he did nothing to keep it. He'll probably be kept on the roster and used in long relief and that will be the determining factor as to whether he shows he can pitch in the major leagues. We all know from the Scott Ruffcorn experience that there is a huge difference in moving from the minor leagues to the majors and Floyd wasn't exactly lights out in the minors. I don't believe that Danks will let down now that he has the job because competition will always remain. Just ask Brian Anderson.

Here in Tucson, I agree with the decision to make Danks the 5th starter. I was at Hi Corbett yesterday, and he impressed me despite his walks. As for Gavin Floyd, I think he belongs in Charlotte.

California Sox
03-24-2007, 11:29 PM
I agree that Floyd needs to get innings in at Charlotte. He says he feels good and more confident in his stuff for the first time in a while. Irregular innings as the long man are the last thing he needs. As for the last two slots: I think Logan is going to make the team. I think the final spot comes down to Aardsma, Sisco, Haeger, Russell and I think they go with Sisco giving us three lefties in the pen to deal with Hafner, Morneau, Mauer et al. early in the season then adjust as necessary.

First off, Oooribay is the correct pronunciation of Uribe's name but this has been discussed ad nauseum here so....

Danks looks good but my one question is if his changeup is good enough yet. From what I've heard he's got a good fastball and a great curve but was still working on his change. He's going to need 3 pitches to be a successful starter.

Congrats to Danks and good luck. 6-7 innings per and an ERA below 4.8 and I'll say "Danka".

Keep working hard, Mr Floyd. I sort of hope you make the team as the long reliever so you can work with Coop every day.
I put zero credence in spring or preseason stats. I also am not concerned with low velocities from veterans in the spring - why in the world would they show their best stuff when it doesn't count. It's like pre-season football - scores and stats are meaningless; what's meaningful are the things that coaches and scouts look at.

I just hope they can get him to go a bit longer once the bell rings. He's been doing the 3-4 inning thing, maybe now he can stretch it out a bit in his last couple tune ups before the year starts.

I think Boone Logan making the team is a bit of a story too, especially after they were so down on him after the season. I hope the second time is a charm.

Yep, I thought Floyd initially had the inside track due to his age, lack of minor-league options and Danks' age. But Floyd hasn't had a great spring, and it also seems Danks has the guts to go after major-league hitters. OK then! He's scheduled to face the Twins on April 7. Go get 'em!

I'm sure Danks will have some troubles as most young pitchers do but I think he'll succeed. My biggest worry is how effective he will be in August/September, most young pitchers fall off at this time in their first full season.

Ozzie and Co. never screw with the rotation; I don't see this being any different here. If we want him to succeed, he needs to be out there regularly, not picking and choosing days. Besides, he'll be up against whoever the Twins' fifth starter is, who isn't going to be doing anything special.

Good for Danks. He pitched well. I really like Danks' future, and hopefully we'll get a good glimpse of that this year.

I hope the Sox don't feel like they need to keep Floyd around to help justify the Garcia trade. Send him down to the minors to suck it up there. Last thing we need is a crappy long reliever who can't throw a strike.

Danks did earn the spot. I love his delivery, too - real smooth from what I've seen so far. Another important thing to remember is that the White Sox have a lot of pitching depth, and at some point when the season gets into that long stretch over the summer, don't be surprised if Gio Gonzales or Lance Broadway play a part in all of this. That's just in case anyone on the staff may seem to wear down. We'll see what happens.

That's a good response. It reminds me of a Chris Farley character;

But I guess the "powers that be" will keep signing my paycheck, at least until John and Jane Q. Happy Birthday

As part of an initiation into the big leagues, several Sox players reportedly (I didn't see it) made Danks go into the stands during a game last week (in full uniform) and serrenade a young female fan with a top-of-the-lungs rendition of Happy Birthday.

Danks then returned to the dugout, scoring tons of points with his teammates.
