Just saw this on ESPN's bottomline, Erin Andrews is reporting the Red Sox have dumped the Paplebon to the rotation plans, and he will remain the closer.

So much for the doctors orders.

I hope JD will get a chance to tee him up again.

From the article on espn.com http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring2007/news/story?id=2808345

Because of Papelbon's shoulder issues, there will be restrictions on how he is used: He won't throw when he is tired and he won't appear in more than three games in a row, Andrews reports.

Julian Tavarez will take Papelbon's spot in the rotation
This basically happened because they have no other solid closer and Papelbon wants to be the closer more than he wants to be a starter.

Julian Tavarez? :rolling:

I think the Red Sox are going to surprise some people this year...and be pretty bad. I like third place for the Red Sox.

And they still won't be good enough to win their division.

Boston is screwed. Papelbon will be very hittable now that the league seems to have figured him out.

Uhhh, huh? Since when has the league figured him out? And even if they have, why will that prevent him from being successful? Every pitcher gets "figured out" eventually.

Anyway, I'm not surprised. Closer was clearly a far bigger issue for them than their 5th starter. It'll be interesting to see how Jon Lester progresses and what point they feel he's ready to return to the majors.

Do the Red Sox now make a run at Lieber? They don't really have the reliever the Phillies need. Or do they now really step up their efforts to get Clemens?

I was thinking the same thing.

The White Sox seem to love Papelbon and Mariano. Bring 'em on!

Is Lester injured or something? I thought he was pretty much MLB-ready.

Lester was diagnosed with a rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma late last season. The cancer is in remission and he has re-gained all of the weight. He's even also supposedly regained most of his velocity. But for obvious reasons, the Red Sox don't want to rush him back, so he's likely to work his way up slowly and maybe return to the majors around the All Star break.

Ahh, completely forgot about that. Makes sense then. Still...Julian Tavarez?:?:
