The Red Sox wanted their fifth outfielder to be able to play center, so Abbott didn't have much chance to make the team.

I have a couple of female Sox fans that miss him as well....and of course it had nothing to do with his baseball ability

Actually, I do miss him for more than his looks, though they were cute! He always came in and performed well. A few times he came in & produced game winning RBI's off the bench.
