March 11, 1968 - Sox rookie pitcher Cisco Carlos is part of the cover shot for Sports Illustrated. The caption reads, "The Best Rookies Of 1968." Unfortunately Carlos doesn’t turn out to be one of them, either in the short term or the long term. In fact of the five players on the cover only Johnny Bench and Mike Torrez made a name for themselves in the sport.

Thanks for the photo, Lip. That cart could match the Partridge Family Bus! Unfortunately, the 1968 season ended a 17-year streak of pretty competitve baseball by our Sox. Our south siders finished well below .500, and didn't quite recover until 1972 (1971 was a respectable year, at 79-83 I think). And of course, 1968 was a very turbulent year with the assassinations of M.L. King and Bobby Kennedy, and the Vietnam War growing more and more out of control.

If you ride in the golf cart backwards, the motor whines, "Paul is dead... Paul is dead... Paul is dead..."
