There's an interesting blurb in there about how he almost became the Cubs manager right before Dallas Green resigned.

I remember that saga very well. Vuk was set to be named manager when Dalls Green got the hook and Jim Frey replaced him as GM, and since Vuk was one of Dallas' guys no way was he going to be anything on the cubs.

So other than a brief interim stint when Frey was fired in 1986, Vuk was the unannounced cub manager for about three or four hours, IIRC.

I just read in the paper that he was in grave condition yesterday.

He was in VERY grave condition yesterday, but passed away earlier today.

I think he's the 4th person involved in the 1980 World Series that has died of brain cancer - along with Quisenberry, Ken Brett, and Tug McGraw. :(: What an awful coincidence.

He was always talked about as being a managerial candidate. And that he'd be a great one. I wonder why he never got the chance. Very sad story.
