Mike Hampton may have torn a muscle in his side taking batting practice Wednesday, which will keep him out weeks at least and set back what was already a closely-watched comeback from reconstructive elbow surgery.

Batting practice?

Those anchors of that Astros staff way back when have really taken off since then. Hampton and Lima for the Hall of Fame.

Hampton got a lot of mileage out of that one season in '99 where he went 22W-4L with a 2.90 ERA. Outside of that one year, he never won more than 15 games in a season. For the Rockies to give him an 8 year deal worth over $120 million was insane. Of course, there were a lot of crazy deals around that time. There was Griffey's 10 year deal and the awful 5 year, $55 million deal the Dodgers gave for the mediocre injury prone Darren Dreifort.

It's really not that surprising. He was a headcase when he played for the Mets and just a ball of quirks. This past offseason's deals may be worst than the one where he received that absurd deal with the Rockies.

During the Braves Pirates game last week on ESPN they were talking about how he is a key for their season this year if they want to make the playoffs or contend. Looks like that may be in jeopardy if he can't stay healthy.

That offseason will compare with this one. The market went crazy again this year. Many teams will get burned at the end of these contracts.
