I know he still has to prove he has staying power, but this is a steal for the Twins.

True, it only guarantees them one more year. Still a good move though.

True, it only guarantees them one more year. Still a good move though.it's a GREAT move considering that the market will most likely be in a "down" period(middle of the CBA), and that the twinkies will be in mauer's good graces(no messy arbitration hearings or negotiations)

Talk about striking while the iron's hot, I guess they are serious about keeping their players.:(:

Well, sorta. Santana's going to be looking at A-Rod money after 2008, so I assume there's no way they're going to hang on to him.

Let's hope so because I really don't want to see him take a discount to stay with the Twins.

It would take a huge hometown discount or a lot more fans at the stadium to fit that type of money into their payroll.

Same here. I would love to see him however cash pay checks signed by Jerry Reinsdorf

Fat chance.Uncle Jerry doesn't do deals for more
than 3 years with pitchers. He may change his mind
in the future, but I doubt it.

very deserving. As much as I don't want to see this. I think Mauer will have a season very comparable to last years.

If their rotation is also made up of Garza, Bonser, Perkins and Baker...they will definitely be able to afford him.

Silva, Ponson and Ortiz will be long gone.

Yeah, but you left a name off of that list. One that's going to make the need to spend money they can't afford on Santana unnecessary.

One major difference between Mauer and Santana is that Mauer grew up in the Twin Cities a Twins fan. He is playing out his lifelong fantasy not only being on the Twins, but making a major contribution to the them.

I'm sure the same can't be said of Santana.

Oh god I hope not

I'm hoping that Santana will show some gratitude to the team/system that made him, but I'm not holding my breath.

Smart deal for the Twins, they have Mauer relatively cheap for the first 2 years, then when the big cash kicks in, they could trade him to 3 teams he designates before the season, in the off chance that they can't afford him.

Can Kenny work his magic and bring him to the South Side?

Hopefully uncle Jerry and Co. will give him the A-OK.

Just a thought, but I was thinking that if they were able to reduce payroll by about 15-20 million for 2008 while staying competitive (i.e.-Trading Konerko,Vazquez and Contreras and replacing them with Fields at 1B, and two of the pitching prospects that pan out for the better) do you think that maybe then they could spend the money saved from '08 on Johan Santana?

We don't have to cut payroll to bring in Johan. All Jerry has to do is raise KW's budger and we can get him. I know this should be deep pinked, but I would love to have Santana on our team.

I know they don't but knowing them, if they did cut payroll for a season, then they would definitely be inclined to do so.
