Jim Parque continues his efforts to come back after several years on the shelf with shoulder problems by signing a minor league contract with the Mariners. The deal has an out clause if he is not with the big league team by the All Star game.

Good for him! I always remember his performance in game 1 of the 2000 ALDS with fond memories. And then get  at the thought of Manuel pulling him.

I always like Jim, but I also do remember that game against the Mariners in 2001 when he got lit up when Cameron was en route to all those home runs.

I'm going to go with his blog/weekly column, selling his Ferrari or Lambourghini or e-bay and his days at UCLA with Glaus.

True, but he was pitching on a partially torn labrum that year. His velocity was gone. He never was a power pitcher but he went from throwing 88 mph in 2000 to 80mph in 2001. Pre-2001, Parque was a decent back of the rotation starter. Afterwards, he was never the same guy. Safeco could be the right park for him to pitch in if his velocity has returned.

In an era when Jason Marquis can get $21 million thrown at him, it is a cheap and completely risk-free gamble to give Jim Parque a minor league contract.

Good for Jim. I hope he wins some games and collects big-time. He certainly is more deserving of the money -- if even based solely on his '00 performance with the Sox -- than any of these current sacks of **** are getting for nothing more than being born five years later.

The game was May 2, 2002.

I always really liked Jim. My favorite moment of his was the brawl in 2000 against the Tigers, where Dean Palmer charged the mound and THREW his helmet at Parque. Jimmy just stood there with his arms up like "Here we go." Great times.

Parque was into the Sox/cubs rivalry, was ready to go when we brawled with DET back in Y2K, but honestly, he was nothing better than a AAA pitcher. Maybe as a reliever he could have been spotted better. He did not have the stamina to start then, I doubt he'll have it now.
