January 29, 1981 - Jerry Reinsdorf and Eddie Einhorn gain control of the White Sox after American League owners turn down Bill Veeck’s attempt to sell to Eddie DeBartolo. Reinsdorf’s original partner is William Farley but he drops out because the Sox went out and signed free agents Ron LeFlore and Jim Essian. Farley didn’t approve of the team spending three million dollars for both. Reinsdorf originally was part of a group trying to buy the New York Mets. Einhorn was trying to get the San Diego Padres originally.

Who knew that would lead to championship pay-dirt 25 years later?
Anyway, what I don't know for sure is under which ownership was Carlton Fisk signed by the White Sox?

Pudge was signed by Jerry and Eddie. There were some players acquired in the "grey area" between Veeck and Jerry and Eddie supposedly with DeBartolo money.

The players signed by Veeck during the 'gray area' period were Essian and LeFlore. DeBartolo agreed to assume all debts of the White Sox upon completion of the sale and also gave Veeck money to 'play with' to try to improve the team.
Regarding Fisk, that was primarily Einhorn and Roland Hemond who made that possible. Even Reinsdorf himself acknowledged this:
"Eddie Einhorn immediately saw the public relations value in getting Carlton immediately." – Jerry Reinsdorf quoted on the "official" White Sox web site, www.whitesox.com, December 23, 1998.

Legend has it they were literally at Fisk's doorstep.
