However, Web sites, such as White Sox Interactive -- which includes plenty of Web posters who will show up at SoxFest -- provide a preview of what this weekend will be like.

"Boy I like Kenny Williams," a poster named Tragg wrote. "Oh, I don't like all of his trades (although they always make more sense after thinking about them) but he knows where he's going -- he's a leader."

Most fans have been more polarized than that during an offseason that included much-maligned trades of pitchers Freddy Garcia to Philadelphia and Brandon McCarthy to Texas.

Williams has repeatedly said he doesn't make moves for the fans, but will likely be left defending himself this weekend.

"I can't wait for SoxFest so I can rip Kenny a new one and see everyone else do the same," Crazyozzie02 wrote immediately after the Dec. 23 trade of McCarthy. "I am selling my season tickets right now to my best friend because I have no interest in seeing a team that is not committed to bring a World Series to us this year. (Forget) the Sox, I'll be back in '08."

He gets props for apologizing but alas, that published post certainly doesn't cast WSI Sox fans in a positive light. At least they didn't pick up on one of Whitesox4ever's trade ideas.

I personally am a bit confused by the language used as well -

Has the Sox fan base really been polarized? I think, if anything, there was a lot of *** and head scratching when it first happened....but then you start to read articles, and see Kenny's comments, etc....to me, what I think helped was KW's interview on WSCR....the tone in his voice (as well as the same tone in Coop's) leads me to think we will be competitive this year, and for some time to come....

So I don't necessarily agree with the "polarizing" thing....

Personally, I think a newspaper should have to ask permission before using a quote from this or any other message board. Hopefully they did.

This appears to be the new, cool thing to do in reporting. I'm guessing b/c it bodes well for a lazy reporter. I actually saw an article the other day that featured quotes from the myspace pages of soldiers that had died in Iraq. That struck me as a bit tacky. Eventhough I think it's terrible journalism I'm not sure they should have to get permission from anyone.

When the CTA configured two Brown Line test cars with aisle-facing seating a couple years ago, I was fotunate enough to be able to ride it (by sheer chance during my morning commute). I posted my thought/opinions about the cars on a Chicago transit messageboard. A couple days later, I got an e-mail from a writer at the Sun Times which said she had seen my post and was asking if they could quote it for a story they were writing about the test cars.

We would need to default to the WSI mods on this one to see if anyone contacted them. I should point out that the Sun Times story used my actual name as it is what I posted it under; "crazyozzie02" could be anyone.

The article didn't say anything we all didn't already know. Passionate fans are going to argue, sometimes loudly, about trades, etc all the time, which is OK. No one believes everyone at WSI or any other forum are going to be all in agreement. The article did also cite a WSI post supportive of KW, so fair's fair.

I'm assuming any pub casting WSI as an intelligent and passionate site is a good thing. Even if we disagree sometimes.

Contrast this with today's article by Gonzales in the Trib, which simply assumes (without any citation to evidence) that Sox fans are mad at KW and will rip him at Soxfest. Apparently the only saving grace will be the recent signing of a backup OF.

The article actually puts the recent trades and acquisitions in a pretty positive light. Gonzales seems to think KW does things right at least some of the time.

OK, some people will undoubtedly try to rip into KW at SoxFest. It's their prerogative as fans. So what? He's a big boy and these Q & As are never love-fests anyway. He knows that.

To all non believers! Take A hike. I gotta agree with Mike North* here, don't give KW a hard time. He got us a World Series win for crying out loud. You have to be a fan through thick and thin. I have no use for fair weather fans who jump on the winning bandwagon and complain if things aren't perfect the following year. You don't need to be Sox fans and you don't need to be here!

I still regret to this day ever going on that little temper-tantrum.  What is the luck of winding up in a chicago newspaper twice about WSI? When folks like Phil Rogers, Ron Rapoport or Roland Hemond (for the White Sox alumni newsletter) wanted to use material from the player interviews in their stories they always asked for permission.

Personally it wouldn't bother me if they didn't, the simple fact that WSI is getting the publicity is worth it in my opinion.

I'm not trying to start a thing here, but that's pretty much how all message boards are for sports. Easier for people to complain and react instantly I guess. Wasn't the purpose of the site when it was started was for Sox fans to show their true feelings (even if dumb) rather than smile for the camera or care what anyone else thinks?
