This could possibly be the most idiotic list I've ever seen... http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove06/columns/story?id=2741064

I don't even get the point of the article.

The fact that you have 5 teams listed there who didn't make the playoffs (three of which weren't even close) followed by giving the "cold plate special" to a team that hasn't missed the playoffs in a good while, and as much as I can't stand 'em, that doesn't look to change anytime soon.

A fitting slogan for them:

ESPN: "Hey, at least we have Miss Cleo beat. ...Right?"

EDIT: Wow. Maybe I am misreading this, but did ESPN actually rank the AL Central as 4th of the 6 divisions???

No, you did not misread that. But what you have to understand is this...

The eternal debate over who's hot and who's not is driven by an even more maddening question: What, exactly, is the definition of hot?

In identifying baseball's hottest division, do we mean the trendiest (most attractive to free agents), the most talented (greatest star quotient) or the most competitive (tightest races)?

Let's face it, instant popularity is king in a world of short attention spans, which is why the NL West gets our vote. It's hot, at least right now, because it's the new home of the game's richest free-agent pitcher (Barry Zito (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6394)), the most celebrated homecoming king (Randy Johnson (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=4288)) and the collective migrations of Jason Schmidt (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5340), Greg Maddux (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=3933) and David Wells (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=4057).

I'd have to agree with you ESPN is becoming more and more of a joke. Yet like the idiot I am I go back to see if they say anything nice about the Sox. The fact thta it has never happened hasn't seemed to gte through my head.

Don't feel too bad, I'm exactly the same way. Why I haven't gotten the point by now is beyond me.

No, you did not misread that. But what you have to understand is this...

I guess a division with the World Series champions from 2005, the defending AL champion from last year (that essentially has their team still intact), and a team with the ability to still take away the ALC title despite an inferior payroll IS worth a ranking of fourth of six. ESPECIALLY behind the mighty, mighty NL Central!

At least Klapisch completely discredits himself immediately by basing his decision off of 5 pitchers... 4 of them clearly over the hill, three of them over 40. Trying to credit the NL West by mentioning David Wells? Touché, ESPN!

(And yeah, I do realize that this isn't going to be any different 1, 2, 5, 10 years from now. They will continue to write trash year in and year out. Doesn't mean I'm not going to be quiet about it, though! :redneck )
