Two significant historical notes for this day:

January 20, 1965 - Another big deal pulled off by Sox G.M. Ed Short which kept the franchise’s streak of winning seasons going. The Sox were part of a three team trade with the Indians and Athletics. When all was said and done, the Sox parted with outfielders Jim Landis and Mike Hershberger, pitcher Fred Talbot and catcher Cam Carreon.

In return they got back power hitting catcher Johnny Romano, pitcher Tommy John and outfielder Tommy Agee. Agee would be named Rookie of the Year in 1966, John would be part of the Sox brilliant starting rotation, making the All Star team for the first time in 1968.

January 20, 1984 - Once again Roland Hemond uses the free agent compensation rule to the White Sox advantage, plucking future Hall Of Famer Tom Seaver from the Mets. In his two years with the Sox, Seaver would win 32 games, including his 300th one overall.

An interesting bit of trivia here:
The Tommy John card pictured here is in "The Baseball Card Bubblegum book," a little book my dad has had for years which is full of hilarious stories and observations about baseball cards. This card is in there because there is something odd about the photo. Anyone care to guess what?

The baseball is in his glove and is clearly seen in the photo.

Exactly. Even though he's posing like he's just thrown a pitch, he still has the ball. :D:
The book also has a story about one guy whose fly was left open on not one, but multiple cards.

Was that compensation pick for losing Dennis Lamp to Toronto?

I remember the year before when the Sox had a compensation pick for losing Steve Kemp, which spawned all of the Fergie Jenkins rumors and resulted in the big Cubs/Sox trade.

Brian:

I'll check on it but off the top of my head I think you are exactly correct.

I think that is correct.

The two other times the Sox selected from that pool they chose Joel Skinner from Pittsburgh for losing Ed Farmer and they took Steve Mura from St. Louis after the Jenkins battle I believe after losing Kemp. The Mura acquisition was the fallout from the Kemp pick.
