Ted Williams led the AL in homers and rbi's in 1949 but missed winning the Triple Crown when he lost the batting title to George Kell by .00016 of a point. Williams did win the AL MVP Award for 1949.

In 1947 Ted Williams won the Triple Crown but did not win the AL MVP Award.

Tiger manager Red Rolfe knew before the last inning in Detroit's game that Kell would win the batting title if he didn't make an out in his final at bat. He was going to pinch hit for Kell but the hitter made the final out. Kell didn't know that the manger knew what Williams had done and would not have went along with the plan.
