Curious move. Where is he going to play? They have Biggio at 2B and Ensberg at 3B. Loretta hasn't played SS in awhile, and Everett is a better option there than he is, especially at this stage of his career.

Even more strange, considering that they have Mike Lamb and Berkman who play the position. Why would he sign to be on the bench? :?:

Apparently,
"all over the infield"

There isn't a team in baseball with an opening at second base willing to pay him.

He will be yet another thorn in the cubs' side. I like the pick-up.

So how is it that the Cubs gave DeRosa a $13 million contract when the Astros were able to sign Loretta to a $2.5 mill contract. I thought Loretta was a pretty good player. Was he injured or something?

2006
DeRosa: 13 HR, 74 RBI .296/.357/.456
Loretta: 5 HR, 59 RBI .285/.345/.361

DeRosa also had about 100 less at-bats, still at the money they're paying him its a bit questionable. But Loretta is only 2 years removed from being one of the top average hitters in the league.

I do also, as I was disappointed when the Astros let him go the first time.

The Astros need a #2 hitter a whole lot more than a replacement for any of the infield positions that Loretta plays. He'll likely spell Biggio often, and take Huff's 3B/1B role from last season.

The only thing I don't like about this signing and Huff's departure to Baltimore is that Ensberg looks to remain an Astro for next season.

That's Berkmans' spot and there's no way they're going to put Carlos Lee and Berkman in the same outfield.
