RP Logan/Tracey/Haegar/ Floyd ($380,000)
RP Sisco (L) ($380,000)
RP Aardsma ($450,000)
SU Thornton (L) ($380,000)
SU MacDougal ($1.50 mil)
CL Jenks ($380,000)

Gross payroll: $106,860,000
Less net cash: $11,830,000 (From Thome, Vazquez & other deals + Hermanson buyout)

Total 2007 Net Payroll $95,030,000

Total 2006 Net Payroll $91,750,000

Sources - MLB.com & Hardball Dollars (http://russells.freeshell.org/ddollars/team.php?team=whitesox&name=White%20Sox).

Payroll does not include costs for benefits (Pension and Health & Welfare contributions). The MLB minimum increases by $50,000 for 2007.

Garcia's salary was eaten up by several raises though Kenny said he has the flexibility to obtain another player. I wouldn't mind a Brady Clark type outfielder who can replace Podsednick or Anderson / Sweeney if need be. Kenny should also have some flexibility in July before the trade deadline if he needs to replace a player or players due to injury or performance.

The future's so bright, I gotta wear  .

So the Sox cut payroll to the tune of adding 4M? Cheap bastards.

Increases include:

Garland ($3 mil)
Dye ($2 mil)
Buehrle ($1.85 mil)
Thome ($1.5 mil)
Pierzynski ($1.5 mil)
MacDougal ($1.25 mil)
Podsednik ($1 mil)
Vazquez ($1 mil)

and the two arbitration cases (Crede & Cintron - a $3.5 mil estimated combined increase ($2.5 & $1.0 mil respectively)).

Cheap and stupid.

Excellent. We have more than $5M to spend. Go get Riske and Rhodes to fill our 4/5 slots in the bullpen. Git R' Done Kenny!

:?: Signing relievers to multi year deals is a terrible investment. I can think of better ways to waste money.

Rhodes could be had for a one year deal and Riske would probably be signed for no more than two. Wasting money is counting on Aardsma, Floyd and Haegar/Sisco/Tracey/Logan/Me to fill the 4-6 spots in the bullpen.

I'd much rather have Aardsma and Floyd than Rhodes and Riske.

Vasquez eats up a lot of money. I'd like to see him traded, but so would everyone else here, I'm sure...this also begs the question, who do you get for him?

I'd rather Floyd get ready as a starter in AAA and sign Rhodes for the pen. I'd rather Sisco go down to work as a starter also.

Do last year's payroll numbers include the $4,000,000 for the Thomas and Everett buyouts?

Was there any insurance money coming back for Hermanson (like with Wells in 2001)?

No. Believe it or not, there are some people on here who are rational.

Vasquez is a minor leaguer. We got him in the Cubs trade.

Wow, I never realized how cheap our bullpen is. I would like to see Kenny sign another arm and just move Floyd to AAA to groom him for 2008.

I feel that way too, for 2009 and beyond. Aardsma and Floyd have upside, but expecting performance this season is a huge risk.

I don't care if the bullpen costs $1 or $100 billion, just as long as the pitchers can get hitters out!

Yes - If you click the Hardball Dollars link you will see $3.5 mil charged to our 2006 payroll for Frank Thomas and $500,000.

Insurance money is not included in the figures.

I just updated the original post to account for the 2007 buyout of Dustin Hermanson ($500,000), the only option with a buyout not exercised by the club. Good catch.

Ok, I've updated my salary tracker. The picture below may change a bit as I update it. But I think it does a fairly good job of tracking where the team's payroll is. It's put together thru the years from various sites. Feel free to help me out here if you see something that's grossly wrong.

Either way, the 2007 payroll > 2006 > 2005...

It looks like you can revise Cintron's salary to $1.9 million. How much did he make in '06?

Nice analysis. Makes you realize how difficult Kenny's job is. He's not only worried about resigning/replacing his SPs, but also Dye, Iguchi, Thome, AJ, & Crede.

He's kind of a victim of his own success. He went out and nabbed a number of great, "diamond-in-the-rough" deals, and now those guys have all panned out and are worth a ton more than they're currently getting paid. He's got a nice payroll bump from ownership, but it would take a Red Sox/Cub-like level to keep all these guys or sign comparable replacements (and it's not always easy to find similar undervalued guys).

So I could see his strategy being to focus on the pitching, then either swap them in and resign the hitters or trade them for younger/cheaper hitters and resign the vets. He's got some options now that he didn't have before.
