According to the Beaver County Times (http://www.timesonline.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17598316&BRD=2305&PAG=461&dept_id=478568&rfi=6) (and no, I didn't make that one up), the New York Yankees are willing to send Melky Cabrera to the Pirates for Mike Gonzalez.

Two questions I have about this;

1) Am I missing something here? Is Melky that good that he would be enough to acquire Gonzalez straight up? Or is Gonzalez just overrated and doesn't have that much value?

2) If this goes through, are we seeing Mariano Rivera's replacement (whenever he retires) being acquired?

1) Melky is good. He looks to be a good OBP guy and an above average fielder at the corners. Seems like a nice fit for a #2 hitter. Not to mention he has some power. There just isn't any room for him to play in the Yankee outfield. With Matsui, Damon, and Abreu locked up I think for at least two more season minimal (as a group).

2) Gonzalez had a real good year with Pittsburgh, but he did play on a team where there was virtually no pressure and in the NL. So I don't think it's automatic that'd he turns out to be a success if he went to the Yankees.

Now Newsday (http://www.newsday.com/sports/printedition/ny-spbase165018109dec16,0,6481310.story?coll=ny-sports-print) is reporting that there is a three-way trade in the works that would send Cabrera to the Braves, Gonzalez to the Yankees, and Adam LaRoche to the Pirates.

Yahoo had that rumor up a couple of days ago, only they had the Proctologist as part of the deal. Today, Yahoo says the Braves, Red Sox, and Phillies are also interested in Gonzalez.
