View Full Version : '70s Jersey Question

Does anybody know whether these uniforms:

http://img464.imageshack.us/img464/6586/al1977chicagojl2.gif

Were worn with elastic waistbands or traditional belts? I'm trying to whip up a version of these for MVP 2005, and the game can't handle the fact that the jerseys were actually worn untucked, and I'm just trying to be as accurate as possible.

If anybody knows, I'd appreciate it.

Mods, feel free to move this if I have posted this in the wrong place.

Elastic waistbands

Although these are regarded by many as the ugliest uniform of the last half century, if not all-time, a couple of Sox players from the era claim it was the most comfortable uniform they ever wore.

Elastic waistbandsThanks, that's kinda what I had guessed at. Were they all blue? Or did they match the pants?

For the record, here's how the unis look in MVP so far (with the guessed-at blue elastic waistbands):

Excellent work! I downloaded a bunch of modded uni's for the older MVP games and this ranks way up there. BTW, Jon Rauch won the Cy Young for me on MVP 03. Whoda thunk it?

Not to be picky, but the uniform jerseys were never worn tucked inside the pants during those years.

JeffOn the PC version, yes. You may be able to import uniforms into the Xbox version, but I'm not sure.

www.mvpmods.com (http://www.mvpmods.com) is probably the best place to go for stuff. I have a bunch of stuff up there...some Sox, some not.

Oh, and the best tool I've come across for adding uniforms is a tool called MVPStudio - they have it at mvpmods.

Yeah, I was curious about that too because in my version of MVP, the only one of those that can be unlocked are the all navy blue unis.

Wow!!! That is awesome!!!

In a slightly related note, how come Old Comiskey isn't one of the special parks you can unlock??? How come Ebbets Field isn't either? Yet the place where the Expos played in Puerto Rico is...the injustice of it all!!!

In theory, it can be added through some extensive editing using Tiger Stadium as a base, but I'm not up to that.

I'm with you. I like them. I don't think the Sox have had a bad uniform yet but somehow these always get slammed.

I agree they would have looked silly if the Sox played in anyplace but Comiskey Park. The classic architecture always seemed to go well with those uniforms.

Im glad I didnt base my opinions of the SOX back in the day on those Uniforms, because I remember how much I hated them. That said, I do think they have a certain nostalgic charm now. Anyone remember the SOX wearing the all navy blue version, and Bart Johnson getting pushed in the back at 1b, his jersey flopping wildly, igniting a huge brawl ??

To answer the $64,000 question, the White Sox had a navy blue elastic waistband on both sets of pants (the white ones were most visible, the navy blue waistband)

and on the subject of these uniforms, I have emailed Brooks about it countless times, for the SOX to do a turnback the clock game, wearing those uniforms, (also, the 70's red ones) especially against the Flubs. How cool would it be to have the SOX in the all navy blue version?

How cool would it be to have the SOX in the all navy blue version?IIRC, they were supposed to wear them a couple seasons back in a game in Toronto(?), but there was some screwup or other snafu, and they would up wearing their regular road uniforms with the throwback hats. Darned if I can find any verification of that, though. Heck, I probably read about it here somewhere.

I do remember Bart Johnson covering first and getting shoved; I think it was against the royals (lowercase intentional... they could lose a hundred every year and I'll never feel sorry for them.) I also remember that when Bart Johnson wore the all navy version of the uni he looked 7 feet tall.

I do like the uniform though (first ever retro uni and of course it ws the Sox.)I have the navy road jersey (72) but wish I could get it in a Lemon, Gamble, Zisk, Luzinksi, Hoyt or Burns.

The only SOX uni I did not like was the '87 to '90 style. That was generic as all get-out.

An additional benefit from this would be the availability of the throwback jerseys for sale again with a choice of names. Triple Threat Sports could get the correct font (hopefully) and I could get whoever I wanted from my childhood. Who would it be? Jim Spencer? Francisco Barrios? Pablo Torreabla? Heck I would have to get several. Brooks are you listening?

I do have a really old road jersey (without a name) from that era, but it would only fit me if I could go back to about age 13. I think its about an Adult "Small".

The only SOX uni I did not like was the '87 to '90 style. That was generic as all get-out.

I suppose those would be my least favorite. They were decent enough, but like you said, very generic. Maybe because the teams of that era were pretty generic too.

I was reading another forum this weekend and came across an interesting tidbit about these uniforms that I never knew before. There were actually two versions of each jersey. There was a regular solid polyester version for colder days and a mesh version for extra hot days (same material as football uniforms).

Mesh version:

There's something wrong with the description of a pennant I found on that site

The Chicago White Sox are always the bridesmaid and the never the bride. In the Windy City, the Cubs get all the national attention and glory. That is until this year. 2004 will forever be known as the year a group of South Siders got together and took control of baseball. The White Sox ended years and years of misery with a World Series title. This pennant dates back to the mid '40s and features "Chicago" breaking away from the baseball after being struck mightily by a bat. The green felt pennant, 27 1/4", is complete with the original tassels and approaches NM.

I had wondered about that. The mesh jerseys are noticeable in photos; I never thought about the weather but it makes perfect sense. I had considered that maybe the different fabrics were tried in different years but couldn't find any pattern to it.

A couple years ago, someone on here mentioned they bought an old game-used jersey on Ebay (or somewhere) and there was evidence of it once having some other player's name sewed on it before the current name was added. I thought that was interesting, as well as shining a light on the penny-pinching they did in those days.

Huh, kind of like the new coolbase jerseys.

Someone mentioned earlier how those unis go so well with the artechticure at Old Comiskey and I couldn't agree more. Like if you were to play MVP now and you wear any throw back at US Cellular, it looks odd.

For what it's worth my favorite uni was the 1982-1986 one. But I like that uni too, brings to mind photos of the South Side Hitmen.

Apart from the one-off bermuda shorts fiasco, the White Sox are not even close to having worn the worst uniforms in baseball history. Witness:

Absolutely right, and Darrell Porter was the one who instigated that vicious brawl.

IIRC the first couple years of those uniforms the Sox almost always wore the dark pants, with the white jerseys at home and the dark jerseys on the road. I didn't really care for how the white pants looked with either jersey, but that's jmho.

From the photos I've seen, it looks like the Sox didn't start wearing the white on white combo until Reisendorf bought the team, and that was only for the one year.
