Hendry also has set his sights on outfielder Cliff Floyd, 33, for left-handed help off the bench. Floyd, a Chicago native who starred at Thornwood High School in South Holland, was limited to 97 games for the New York Mets last season because of a sprained left ankle and Achilles tendinitis. Floyd made $6.75 million last season, hitting .244 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI for the NL East champion Mets. He has been a longtime favorite of Hendry's.
Hendry has known Floyd since he tried to recruit him to play baseball at Creighton when Hendry coached there. Floyd bypassed college as a first-round draft pick of the Montreal Expos in 1991.
Mets general manager Omar Minaya last week offered Floyd a contract to return, but the Mets' reported interest in signing free agent Moises Alou could influence Floyd's decision.
