View Full Version : How good is Maggs?

From Ken Rosenthal's (Sporting News) mailbag.

I just came across this tidbit: "Magglio Ordonez became the first AL hitter ever to bat .300 with 30 homers, 100 RBIs, 40 doubles and 25 stolen bases."
How good can he be?

*** Steve: Ordonez is pretty darn good already, and it is amazing that he doesn't get more attention, considering that he plays in Chicago. He posted the numbers you cited last season with White Sox teammate Frank Thomas appearing in only 20 games. Now that Thomas is healthy, Ordonez should get even more RBI opportunities.

That said, Ordonez still has room to grow. He did not rank in the top 10 in the AL in either on-base percentage or slugging percentage last season. Still, he is a remarkably clutch performer -- his career on-base/slugging percentage with runners in scoring position (.917) is higher than his overall OPS (.863).

And at 28, his best might be yet to come.
