Bad things have happened to the first 2 managers asked to go to Japan with the MLB All-Stars. Ken Macha gets fired and now Terry Francona is in the hospital. Who next?

ST. LOUIS -- The Red Sox sent out word last night that Terry Francona, who last week had agreed to replace Ken Macha as manager of a team of major leaguers going to Japan next month for a series of exhibitions, has withdrawn.

Some players should withdraw. If bobby Thigpen hadn't gone on the tour after his 57-save season he might have been a better MLB pitcher after his 57-save season. It's an attractive offer, more so for the manager, getting a free trip to Japan, but the season is long enough as it is.
