I really think the Padres have a chance to win it all. I just don't see any team that is a clear-cut favorite. The Padres have one starter who can be as dominant as any starter not named Johan Santana, three other quality starters, a good bullpen and a scrappy offense. I can see it happening.

Side notes: The Tigers look BAD right now. Look for them to get swept. I like Oakland's team slightly better than the twins. And the yankees shouldn't run into too much trouble at all this postseason with the only realistic chance of them getting beat is in the ALCS.

NLCS: Padres over Mets
The NL playoffs will be the decider of who will go get their butts whipped by the AL representative, as it has been in the previous two years. Doesn't really matter who comes out of the NL.

World Series: Yankees over Padres

Overall, I believe it will be an uneventful postseason, with another boring yankee title.

These are tough series for pickem. NY over Detroit seems easy, especially with just happened last week/2nd half (but we saw last year that doesn't mean anything). But if I look at the pitching staffs, Det is a slam dunk for me over NYY, without taking a Randy Johnson injury into consideration. But the Det staff has to face a tougher offense than the NY one. I think Det can easily pull this out though if taken too lightly.

Min vs Twins, eww. Twins don't seem to have Oakland issues. I would say that the pitching gives the A's the advantage, that the Twins are just Santana and ____,but that's been the story of their season and they've been on amazing rip. Home field and that bullpen could be lethal. A dome bounce and a late lead and the game is over (Twins record with a late game lead is unreal). I picked Oakland but could easily be either one.

The NL ones could go either way as well, but I'm not as interested because of the mediocrity

The NL hasn't won a WS game since 2003; this doesn't seem to be the year they'll start again, much as I hate to say it.

Edit: This is a crappy postseason. I just don't see a challenger for the Yankees- that's what the Sox would have been.

2nd Edit: Oh, and how do fans in Oakland feel about a 9 AM start just so the Yankees can play in prime time? Well, I say **** the A's.

I stand by my prediction.

The Padres are 8-2 in their last 10 coming into the playoffs. It's always a team that gets hot in the last week that does well in the postseason. Minnesota had a tough time with the Sox to close it out, the Tigers were swept by the Royals, and the Yankees nearly were no-hit by Daniel Cabrera on Thursday. The Cardinals backed their way in and the Mets struggled in their last 10. Only the Dodgers come in on a real hot streak, winners of their last 7. The Padres come in with a rotation of Jake Peavy, Chris Young, David Wells, and Woody Williams. Compare that to any other NL rotation, and it's better than it. Wells is a solid postseason pitcher and Young has flirted with a few no-hitters this year. Their bullpen is anchored by Cla Merideth, Scott Linebrink, and Trevor Hoffman. They have the best bullpen in the NL, too. The way they play fits their park perfectly, and teams that rely on the longball like the Mets and Cardinals may find it tough to hit the ball out of Petco in a short series.

When the Padres make the series, they'll probably run into the Yankees. Good pitching always beats good offense, and the World Series will be no different.

What I think will happen:
ALDS:
Yankees -over- Tigers in 4
Twins -over- A's in 5

NLDS:
Padres -over- Cards in 4
Mets -over- Dodgers in 5

ALCS: Yankees -over- Twins in 6
NLCS: Padres -over- Mets in 6

World Series: Yankees -over- Padres in 6

What I'd like to happen:
ALDS:
Yankees -over- Tigers
A's -over- Twins

NLDS:
Padres -over- Cards
Dodgers -over- Mets

ALCS: A's -over- Yankees
NLCS: Dodgers -over- Padres

World Series: Dodgers -over- A's

As long as the Tigers and Twins are out in the first round (Tigers will be, no doubt), I'll be happy. I'd rather an NL team win the World Series, though...and it would be nice to see the Yankees not there. But like someone said earlier, there's no clear favorite. No team has all the tools...so I think there may be some surprises.

Buehrle:

From The print edition of The Sporting News (just FYI)

"Since the start of the expanded plauoffs in 1995 the team with the best winning percentage in its league during the final two weeks has advanced to the World Series six times. The teams with the worst percentage? Six times too."

"Since 1995 home teams are 6-7 in Game #5 of the LDS, 3-2 in Game #7 of LCS and 191-169 overall. You might as well flip a coin to predict who will come out on top."

"Of the 11 World Series winners since 1995, five had ERA's in the post season of under 3.00. Four had ERA's of over four including the vaunted 2004 Red Sox."

I'm not so pretentious to make predictions, but I have noticed a pattern and expect that the Tigers to lose three straight to the Yankees.

It has occurred to me that the Tigers are the anti-2005 White Sox -- giving up the division they seemed to have a lock on. The Sox won their last five games to seal the deal and went on to win their next three against the pedigreed team from the East. I expect the Tigers, who lost their last five games to lose to the surging division rival, to go on and their three to the Yankees.

While people all last year were saying the Sox would fold after dumping Ordonez, people were saying the Tigers were for real with Ordonez in the heart of their order.

There's a symmetry to it.
