View Full Version : Just how valuable are "clutch players"?

Most of us probably remember the recent exploits of Timo Perez (either "c'mon Timo!" or that 3 RBI single against the Angels), so my question is, in deciding your 25 man roster how many spots should be left to utility/clutch hitters?

If the clutch hitter is Timo: none.

Hey, Timo has a career .202 average as a pinch hitter! What more do you want from a clutch guy?!

The "c'mon Timo!" moment was actually him getting driven in from 1st base if I remember correctly. He didn't do anything besides run on that play.
Can anyone give the details of that game?

If I remember right, that game was against Cleveland in 2004. Damaso Marte gave up a homer in the 9th to blow the save. (I think Victor Martinez hit it).
In the bottom of the 9th, Timo hit a single up the middle, and Ben Davis came up and drove a ball into the left-center field gap. Timo scored from first, and as he was running home Hawk was yelling "C'mon Timo!!" He was barely safe at home. I think that game was late August/early September.

Incriminating pictures of the manager. If it's good enough for Timo...

That sounds about right. I was at that game, it was a good time.
Timo is the further thing from clutch.

I remember Timo driving in the tieing run against Oakland in the 9th inning with 2 outs right after Ozzie was aruging with the homeplate ump for 5 minutes but we went on to lose that game in the 10th 8-9 if I recall correctly.
