September 22, 1959 - The White Sox clinch the American League pennant beating the Indians 4 - 2 in Cleveland.Al Smith and "Jungle" Jim Rivera hit back to back home runs in the game. Smith also throws out former Sox star "Minnie" Minoso trying to score a run. A crowd estimated by the Chicago Sun Times at 125,000 were at Midway Airport to greet the Sox when they returned home. All this on a night when Chicago fire commissioner Robert Quinn ordered the air raid sirens turned on to celebrate the title, causing fear and panic in a number of non baseball fans who thought the Russians were attacking. The Sox would wind up winning the 1959 pennant by five games over the Tribe with a mark of 94 - 60. (A few of the members of the 1959 American League Champions including Billy Pierce, Bob Shaw and J.C. Martin talk about that wild night in their interviews at White Sox Interactive.)

As disappointing as 2006 has been, I always think of this- whenever I used
to read about the 1959 pennant, I used to do so with envy that Sox fans
who were alive back then got to experience the thrill of seeing the White
Sox clinch the AL pennant and play in the World Series. It was something
I honestly thought I'd never get to see in my lifetime. Well, I have and I
no longer have those feelings of envy.

Not that I am satisfied with this year. I wanted them to win as many in a
row as possible. I expect they'll be back in 2007 and primed to win it all
again.

Well stated.

'59 was long before I was born and the World Series experience was completely foreign to me (and to most Sox fans by '05). The '59 team will forever be a part of Sox history and I'm thankful that '05 gave our generation a chance to experience a championship.

I was two when the Sox won in '59; so last year was essentially my first World Championship, let alone my first World Series, and I'll be 50 this winter. :o: So I waited a LONG time and experienced a lot of highs and (mostly) lows while I was waiting. The glow of '05 still shines for me.

So hey, let's do it again next year.

It doesn't seem like that long ago, but I guess it is. I was in the 4th grade and remember the pennant and the city the way it was then. I was hopeful that they'd win the series and be a regular participant in the coming years. It wasn't to be, but those go go Sox years will always be near and dear to me.
