View Full Version : Now we can officially reflect.

We've had a great time rooting for the Sox the two seasons, though this one is ending on quite the disappointing note. Man, to repeat...absolute heaven.

However, since it's not looking to good for our beloved pale hose, I have found that a bit of reflection helps to soothe the soul.

This past year has been a whirlwind. The Sox charmed us in the first half of the 2005 season, only to test our sanity in the late summer months. However, it all ended in the Sox hoisting up the trophy.

I personally have the Sox schwag all over my apartment walls, just the same as you all do. The framed papers, the championship 'banner', the photos, etc. I've got the DVDs, the books, the magazines. I've got the home video of the 2006 opening night celebration (which was the best live event I've ever attended) on my shelf. However, it seemed like the 2006 season came very fast, and there wasn't ever a chance to let it sink in. None of the words written by authors, the commentaries, NONE of it ever seemed real.

Now that the season has ended, and the 2006 season is coming to a close with what looks like a failed shot at a repeat, it just makes me smile THAT MUCH MORE that "Oh, my God, they pulled it off."

We're Sox fans. We're used to these seasons, where that expectation comes and goes with a lack of climax. The hopes and dreams of next season are overwhelming, fueled by that dream of a championship that will never come quick enough. This is the feeling we're used to. It's not the glory of a season that ended with celebration and a ring. It was always someone else's party.

Well, folks, it was our party last October. We were the ones that enjoyed the offseason with a sense of contentment, though we were so caught up with the feeling of "getting another one" that we lost sight of how precious and how hard it was as fans to ride out a championship year. Baseball's a tough game to go through as a fan. It takes so much of an emotional investment to run through a 162 game schedule, only to be faced with absolute uncertainty when the postseason comes. It's the main reason that teams don't repeat as often as in other sports.

Now that the whirlwind is over and the dust settles on the 'quest for the repeat', I find that I can now take a deep breath, pop in those championship DVD's, and reflect on how absolutely breathtaking that feeling was. It was a great run, and I truly feel that this team is going to give us much more to celebrate in the future.

However, as Sox fans, we finally got to live in that dream world, be it for one season. You can never tell what the future holds, but you have to smile when you think about the ride you've been on. All of those hours of emotional commitment over the course of your lives as fans was rewarded. Take a deep breath, get a cold drink, watch those old films, and finally take that chance to REALLY reflect on how great that was. Nothing can compare.

Congratulations, Sox fans. It's been a great run as champs. I still hold the faintest hopes that this team can pull off more magic THIS YEAR, but nothing can take away the magic that we've felt for over a year now.

This is the key. We just need to stay alive. We need, at minimum, to reduce the WC lead by 1.5 games going into that final series. I'm hoping we take 2.5 off since we face Santana there. However, the name of the game is staying alive.
The starting pitching has come around. Don't give up just yet! Go Sox!

Sox must win with Big Game Freddy and Boston needs to knock the Twins around tonight. If this does not happen, I am officially out of hope.

Jurr's post was a thing of beauty. Whether the Sox make it or not, it's POTW material.
