Someone posted about how the Sox play better when they score first, takes the pressure off and so forth.

Great story on that point as well as a few others.

I was actually going to post something on this a few days ago. Good article (I'd never seen it).

That streak they had last year (the streak being irrelevant- the relevant part being they scored first at an insane rate last year) was key.

If there really are "intangibles" in baseball (e.g. pressure, momentum, chemistry), then scoring first HAS to be one of the most important things to do.

Yeah, end result is the team that scores the most- no matter WHEN they score 'em- wins. But always being in a Burlymon 0-7 hole, or the always-predictible 1-3 Freddie gimmie runs in the first... that has to hurt more than if those runs came later. (Because you have a few innings to play "pad the lead".... which is a heck of a lot different than "holy crap our season is collapsing, we need to score a run")

The Sox haven't scored a first-inning run since Konerko's 2-run HR off Radke on 8/25. Throughout last year, and this year too, this team has been very successful when scoring in the first inning. That's something we need to get back too. Too many three up, three down first innings as of late.

We have at least two pitchers in our rotation who routinely struggle in the first inning. We've been behind early A LOT lately.

Which underscores, again, the importance of getting something from the leadoff position in the lineup.

We scored 3 in the first inning against Tampa Bay on 8/29. Since then it's been ten straight games without a first inning run.

Someone posted about how the Sox play better when they score first,

the teams that score first generally win all the shut-outs as well  , so I would imagine most teams that score first do pretty well

Which underscores the importance of what we got from the leadoff position (Podsednik) in 2005.
