Why bring up Bartolo?

There's a running item in the Sun-Times called the Ex-Factor that tracks notable events on former Chicago athletes, and the Sunday Sun-Times featured Bartolo Colon. Bartolo is now in week 2 of a 10 week rehab program for a partially torn labrum (read: done for the season since appx 8/15). The story also states that Bartolo is listed at 250 lbs. but is believed to be substantially heavier. The LAAA hope he comes back to camp next year fully rehabbed and a lot lighter.

So again, why bring up Bartolo?

Because Colon will be entering the 4th and final year of his 4 yr/$51M contract in 2007, an overweight rehab-results risk. That 4th year, Sox fans will recall, was IMHO the main reason Colon signed with the LAAA instead of returning to the Sox, where he'd be lost to the team in this year's pennant race. Wonder how the LAAA feel about that deal now?

Maybe his head or one of his legs.

I'm too busy concentrating on current Sox players and their progress in the present tense to worry about those who no longer play for us.

Just because Bart is big and hurt this year does not mean he would have been big and hurt right now if he remained with us. The events which led to the present circumstances would or could not have presented themselves if he was with a different team.

Man, we should have held onto Sirotka, Eldred, Parque and Baldwin, lol.

In all seriousness, they did make the playoffs their first two years of that contract, so it's difficult to be overly critical.

Colon and Guerrero were opening salvo of the battle between Moreno and the Dodgers for control of LA.
Let's just to be thankful Konerko ended up staying (although some would prefer Ross Gload and the Konerko GIDP/no power streak is causing some of the bandwagon Sox fans to ditch Paulie again).

Good thread idea. I have to admit, I really wanted Colon back, but the Sox clearly made the right move on Colon. In his 3 years since leaving, Colon has had 1 really bad year, 1 really good year and 1 year lost to injury. And who knows what we would have been able to do with last years team if we had Colon's big contract on the books.
