ALL THAT FOR A WHIFF: When Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners was called out looking at a third strike in the fifth inning last weekend at the Metrodome, it was a rare occurrence. But he took away $2 million US from that at-bat. The at-bat was his 450th plate appearance in 2001, which is the final in a series of incentive levels in his contract. His agent, Tony Attanasio, negotiated several incentive clauses in his deal, with the plate-appearance clause providing the largest return, nearly half his annual salary.

The Mariners, who paid Ichiro's former team, the Orix Blue Wave, $13.1 million for the right to negotiate with him, are paying him $14 million, or $4.7 million per season for three years. The plate-appearance incentive and his $50,000 bonus for making the all-star game lifts his income to $6.72 million.
