The Flubs just pinch hit Zambrano. Not to bring him in to pitch, but simply to hit for one AB.

I am curious how often this happens? I can't remember it ever happening in any game I've seen.

Beyond that, I'm curious how often the ace of the staff has been brought in for this.

(By the way, ANOTHER Flubs starter- Mateo- just went down.)

I don't think this is the first time Zambrana has pinch hit. Prior has done it and D. Willis has pinch hit for Florida. I remember Rick Rhoden was a DH for the Yankees in a game when I was little.

Greg Maddux can lay a pretty decent bunt down and he hustles (I remember when he was on the Braves and he beat a throw to 1st). Morris of the Cardinals last year was brought in a couple of times to pinch hit too. I think he hit over .300 for the year or so.

Not all that uncommon in the NL. The pitchers there tend to be better bunters, so using a pitcher (especially a starter who gets a lot more ABs), isn't necessarily a bad idea. Then, you don't have to "waste" a position player (through a double switch to get a pitcher back in, or to take that player out again for the pitcher).

I have also seen the Cards do it with Marquis.

The Sox pinch hit Todd Ritchie at the Metrodome in 2002 in an extra innings game.

I remember it happening quite a bit when I was a kid. Especially with this guy on the team! From http://www.baseballlibrary.com/
A good-hitting pitcher (.222 with 19 homers), he was often used as a pinch hitter. On May 26, 1968, manager Eddie Stanky (http://www.baseballlibrary.com/baseballlibrary/ballplayers/S/Stanky_Eddie.stm) batted him sixth in the order, ahead of Luis Aparicio (http://www.baseballlibrary.com/baseballlibrary/ballplayers/A/Aparacio_Luis.stm), Duane Josephson, and Tim Cullen (http://www.baseballlibrary.com/baseballlibrary/ballplayers/C/Cullen_Tim.stm). Zambrano also pinch hit in that 18 inning game they had a couple weeks ago.

We should pinch hit for Pods with Garland whenever it's a clutch situation!

Yea, he grounded into a double play. I believe it was the 14th inning.

We should have converted him into a DH

He probably could hit better than pitch... which isnt saying much.
