View Full Version : Tiggers/Yanks series thread

ESPN is reporting that tonight's game between the Tiggers and the Yanks has been rained out and will be made up as a day/night DH tomorrow.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=260829110

So, a Sox win tonight will be especially sweet. Cue Rachel Phelps, "That oughta tighten up their little sphincters."

The Red Cubs are behind us, they need to gain on us. However, you can stick a fork in the Red Cubs.

We aren 't chasing the Yankees except for homefield advantage.

Nice break for us. Should be at least. I think a doubleheader is generally your sentence to lose at least once in a day. I'd like to see statistics on doubleheaders. I bet they go 1-1 the vast majority of the time. Hm...

Well, under the old alignment they would play more head-to-head against the Tigers, so that's not really a valid comparison.

Right now, NY is clearly the superior team. I'd say they're our number 1 foe and obstacle for getting back to the Series. And that's assuming we're in, which we are at the moment.

So, in two consecutive innings, the Yankees have had runners on second and third, yet were unable to score. Even worse, both innings they had a man on first which was followed by a double, yet the runner was unable to score from first. Talk about Station to Station baserunning.

Wang is dealing though.

On the other hand I can't stand the Red Sox. I'm enjoying their collapse a great deal. The ramblings of the Sports Guy and ESPN have soured me to no end on the Red Sox.

Anyone banking on it obviously has not watched this team all year. It wouldn't surprise me if we win 12-1 tonight. It also wouldn't surprise me to see Garland lay an egg, we lose an ugly game, Detroit wins, and we end the day 1/2 game farther out than we started.

But the mere fact we have the chance to be under 4, somewhere we haven't been since July 18, that's cool. Now let's hope they can do it.

We are 4.5 back right now with a chance to get to 3.5 tonight. As a matter of perspective, we have played 128 games and are 4.5 back with 34 remaining. Last year after 128 games we had an 8 game lead over the Indians that got down to 1.5 before we created a little more separation. Remember how tense we were with the 8 game lead? Imagine how Tiger fans are feeling right now. They've got both the White Sox AND the Twins breathing down their necks after having a 10 game lead. Not to mention that they are struggling badly. The division race is far from over.

It's funny, but this year is exciting for me. Being at the game on Saturday, even though the ending was awful, was the most intense experience I've had at a Sox game since Game 2 of the World Series last year. Every single game, hell every single pitch has importance. We have a 30 game sprint to the finish, and I love it. Sure, it would be awesome if we had a 15 game lead right now, but in its way this is wonderful. We are watching the best 3-team race in forever, and we are getting meaningful baseball in September. I can't ask for much more.

That's the kind of thing you look at years from now and say, "man that year must have been exciting as hell to watch." Right now, it's not so much excitement for me.
Yeah, hindsight is 20/20. Whenever I watch the White Sox World Series DVD or Sox Pride, I only think of all the great plays and the overall dominance of the team. I seem to recall, however, the many, many periods of angst I felt at different points during the second half of the season. I have to chuckle when I read the boards this year and see everyone complaining about this player or that player or Joey or Ozzie. The same kind of thing was going on last year but people have a tendency to forget all that after a championship. Last year some people wanted Crede gone, thought that we should have kept Carlos Lee instead of PK, thought Contreras was a bum (first half) and IIRC, that Freddy seemed like he didn't care in the second half. I remember when many posters were referring to Dye as Jermaine "Dead" after his slow start.

Last year at this time (132 games)

White Sox 81-51
Indians 74-58 7 GB

Today...
Tigers 82-50
White Sox 77-54 4.5 GB (only 4 in LC)

Kind of crazy, we win tonight and we would only be 3 games behind last year's pace, despite how we've played for the last two months.

Yankees...Yes!

3.5 back after tonight sounds very, very good.

As far as being that close to last year's pace, I guess looking at Detroit's rear end for most of the season puts things in a different perspective.

Kind of crazy, we win tonight and we would only be 3 games behind last year's pace, despite how we've played for the last two months. Now we must ask why we would be three games back from last year's pace. Is it Mackowiak in center, Javier Vazquez's sixth inning follies, Mark Buerhle's struggles, Freddy's loss of velocity, Ozzie's managing, Podsednik's general suckage, Cott's tremendous suckage, Widger's bad games behind the plate, the inability to hold runners, Juan's hitting struggles or Joey Cora's wavin' arm? All of the above?

That was obviously all tongue-in-cheek. The point is that even with all of this, the Sox are pretty close to where they were last year. Kind of amazing, isn't it? In the big picture, I suppose it is made possible because the offense has improved significantly and somewhat counter-balanced the regression of the pitching.

The reality is we barely survived.

Our record over the final week artificially inflated the overall record a little bit, not that we didn't deserve those victories over the Indians with the bench on the field.

This is something I'm sure KW was well aware of going into the offseason. He knew that the pitchers were not going to be able to repeat what they did last year and it would be unfair to expect them to as well. KW did a nice job of making sure he had an offense that could carry this team for a while when the pitchers were tired or struggling...little did we know they would be carrying them almost all year!

What is it that everyone has against Todd Jones? He is actually a really good closer. He usually allows one runner in the ninth or so but in terms of actually saves, he is tied for third in the majors with 35 which is only two behind Jenks, whom I consider a very good closer. And I think he has only blown three or four, maybe five saves this year.

Probably a combination of him pitching in Game 1, and the fact that the AL East is pretty much wrapped up for the Yanks. If they were in a tight race I bet they would've tossed him out there for Game 2...it ****ing sucks that they didn't though.

Yeah, Mo is getting up there in years. I'm sure they figured no reason to risk pitching him twice in one day with the kind of lead they have.

Sure wish they had...

Its a shame the Tigers don't have a month of .450 ball in them, maybe the Sox could catch them. They never lose, .700 ball wire to wire. They're doing it with good pitching and defense and good pitching and defense doesn't slump. I see nothing to prove they will fall of any.

I know the playoffs are a different beast than the regular season but look at the Tigers record against teams that are in contention (and Boston):

2-4 vs. Yankees
3-3 vs. Boston
5-4 vs. A's
5-11 vs. Sox
2-3 vs. Angels
10-5 vs. Twins

27-30 overall

Even one of the wins against the Yankees was a cheapie because it was the second game of a DH and it took a 2-out top of the 9th homerun off someone not named Rivera...
