I am at work talking with a buddy and the Sox uniform with the shorts came up. Does anyone know how many games they wore them for? I thought it was just a one game deal. My buddy seems to think it was longer. Does anyone remember?

As an aside, the Hollywood Stars of the old PCL wore shorts as a regular uniform item for three years! Presumably, they weren't worn every day, but...they had 'em.

I assume you are using ghastly in the rarely used context of "most awesome uniforms in franchise history", as that would be the appropriate answer. Because those unis pictures rule the school.

that year '76 they had the old Sox Caravan (I believe it was called) in South Bend, a few guys modeled the new "throwback uniforms" Jungle Jim Rivera was chosen to model the duds with the shorts....had a nice picture in the South Bend Tribune & a few comments were raised about his legs

I don't. They look like glorified softball uniforms. I like the present ones the best. The Dick Allen-Wilbur Wood era red pinstripe ones weren't too bad either.

I did like the red pin stripes also. They were pretty sharp.

The only downfall was the number on the pants. Totally pointless.

Nah red bites. No red in our uniforms please. We are the WHITE Sox. I think it be manditory across MLB to enforce the pants ending at the knee, like Thome wears em.

Then I say the Sox should make the socks WHITE, and not black. We may look wimpy with white on white, but I think it would be cool.

Many are saying that the White Sox only wore those shorts one time. My memory is admittedly a bit foggy, but I think they were worn on a few occasions. Bill Veeck announced well in advance that the shorts would make their debut on a Sunday afternoon. I recall that particular day being unseasonably cool, but they wore the shorts anyway.

I vaguely remember attending a DH later that summer (again on a Sunday). During the first game I noticed that they were wearing the shorts (from the cheap seats in the outfield, the shorts weren't very noticeable). They wore regular baseball pants in the second game that day.

Those uniforms had to be the ugliest in the history of MLB. I felt sorry for Chet Lemon because he had to wear one of those bowling shirts at the All Star game.

Sadly, the 1976-1989 era of uniforms were the low point in Sox uniform design. There's a reason there were three different styles during those thirteen years; they all blew.

Contrast with the longevity of the classic Sox uniforms:

current: sixteen years and counting, no change in sight
Go-Go Era: twenty-one years, only the tan away unis blemish this run
S-o-x: 19 years, plus a few reprised in the late 1930s

LipThey were absolutely ****ing hideous, not to mention outdated when adopted. The Sox jumped on the pullover-jersey, elastic waistband, garish uniform trend just as it was starting to die. I was so happy when they were replaced that I even preferred the generic uniform that followed, although I never spent any money buying either.

Bring back the '59 uniforms. They look sharp. Besides, we're undefeated in them since they were retired (1-0, thank you, AJ).

I actually like the 1976-1981 uniforms ( and I know there others who do too!). I can't picture the HITMEN wearing anything else. I know they wouldn't work now but much like the Pirates uniforms of the same period they suited the 70's. The White Sox should never have red in their uni's like the 71-75, 82-90 ones did. Navy blue or preferably black only!
