View Full Version : If Sox do or don't make playoffs -...

What kind of fan will you be next year if they don't?

I know that there is the possibility they make the playoffs be 1 or 2 games and possibly miss the playoffs by a game or two..that is baseball and that is reality. But the question is..what kind of a fan are you and will you be next year?

I will still purchase my season tickets. This is my team this year, next year and BEFORE they won the World Series. This was my team in 1998 and 1999 when there were 9,000 people in the stands. The fact is the White Sox won the World Series in our lifetimes!! Many fans of many teams will NEVER witness that. We did. Of course I want to see it again and I am not satisfied with just last year, but, I honestly cannot get upset with Ozzie, Konerko, Dye, Crede, etc for what they did for us last year. I am 34 years old and they gave me memories that I will have fifty years from now when I am 84.

I still think this team will make the playoffs. I am just saying that if by chance they don't, take a deep breath, cry or drink or do what you need to do for a few days but remember that what most of these guys on this team did for us last year. No FIRE OZZIE! (do you want Manual again?), REINSDORF NEEDS TO SELL THIS TEAM (gee, maybe we'll get an owner like the Pirates have instead)..

Dissapointment if they don't make it with their talent - YES! end of the world and end of my Sox Fandom - NEVER!...

anyone else's thoughts if they don't make it? do you jump off the bandwagon? or are is this team truly your team through good and bad?

I know my answer..

Yeah, this is it for me. If they don't win it all this year, I'm becoming a Soccer fan. No way am I wasting anymore time with these "only 1 World Series title in the last 2 years" punks.

There's no doubt about it that everyone on this website will be the same die-hard fan as any other year. I smell some changes being made this offseason as we all have said before (SS, LF and starting rotation). Offseason trades always make everyone that much more excited for the upcoming season. But in no way will I ever give up on the Sox. This season has been so hard to watch sometimes, but I watch them anyways. I'd rather have this type of year than have to go through the early 2000's again anyday.

I'm still going to be just as big of a fan as I always have been, but I'm sick of this second place crap every year (with the obvious exception of last year.)

Yes, they won the World Series in 2005, but I still can't forget finishing second place every other year. Why does it seem like the division winner always rotates and we remain in the same position..? Oakland, Cleveland, Minnesota, Detroit...

I'm sick of that crap.

I'm a fan of this team no matter what. Always have been, always will be. I'll be there till the bitter end.

If they don't make the playoffs, yeah, I'll be pissed, this would go down as the most disapointing season I've ever witnessed. But, I'll be back next year and the next and the next...

I never expected them to win the World Series again but I did expect them to make the playoffs.

I've followed this team for over 40 years and have thus seen things too horrible to put in print, and have stuck by them anyway. And of course, after watching baseball for the same amount of time you learn the magic moments are fleeting and therefore learn to appreciate the ones that do occur. The '05 season thrilled me like nothing else ever has in the realm of sports (the '85 Super Bowl the only possible exception). And despite the recent struggles; the Sox are still in a position to make postseason magic. And even if the don't, I'll be back next year. And the year after. And so on.

The alternative is becoming a Cub fan, which is absolutely out of the question.

All I really care about in the summer is baseball, specifically, a certain team that plays on 35th Street. Having put up with a lot of awful teams and players, I'm not about to abandon the Sox now that the playoffs are looking less and less likely.

I've spent too much time and money on Sox tickets and merchandise in the last 30-plus years to give up. I don't make enough money in my jobs to read the stock pages with fervor. As for Sox boxscores, that's completely different.

When the Sox won it last year, I - a 39-year-old man - wasn't standing in front of my TV crying because I was a fly-by-night fan. This was my team that won.

I'll be a Sox fan until the casket is lowered into the ground and the priest has given his final blessing.

I've been a Sox fan since, well almost 40 years. I will remain a Sox fan. I lost my first tooth in a hot dog at Comiskey park watching Wilbur Wood pitch in both games of a Sunday doubleheader with my dad. Nothing will prevent me from remaining one, except my own masochism.

I know..I get tired of second place. It always seemed like we finished second to Oakland year after year, then Cleveland, then Minnesota..

That is what is most frustrating about being a Sox fan...good, but usually not quite good enough, but never bad..

Kind of like playing the Lotto every day and missing by one number every time. I think that what made us so bitter for so long. Hate to say it..but one or two last place finishes might in the 90's, 00's might have been better for our long term mental health. (Remember how exiting 1990 was even though we missed the playoffs but were in 2nd place simply because 1989 was so bad?)...

But the thing is one day we looked at the numbers and they all came up winners. There is a possibility it could never happen again and a possibility it could. I am just telling everyone try to enjoy the games more, try not to let the losses bother you so much and try not to get so frustrated. We have a good team, a World Championship and a beautiful ballpark. We will never see crowds of 15,000 again even if we don't make the playoffs for another 4 years. Just try to enjoy being a Sox fan and don't look back on it with frustration but remember the good times.

Baseball is meant to be enjoyed. Every fan will see some very good times and very bad times. Don't take the not so good times so hard.

Everyone have a great week and I hope to see some of you Friday..

Are ya kiddin me?

I bleed Silver and Black ... and white ... and red, but not for the Sawx, because I have no choice. :redneck

But *IF* they do indeed miss the playoffs, it will certainly go down as one of the most dissapointing ANYTHINGS (not just limited to the Sox, or baseball) I've ever experienced.

This team has way too much ****ing talent, they'll be there come October.

I'll be just as big a fan next year. I honestly think that if they don't win it this year, they will definitely win it the next year. After all, the Yankees didn't win it in 97. The Sox farm system is full of great prospects right now. This team can be good for years to come.

WHAT!!??? Last year was a lifetime of hopes and dreams come true. My dad had full seasons my whole childhood, and I'll have them for my kids(I have to rotate cant afford seats for all 5 of them) as long I'm alive, and able to. I'm sure they'll do the same when they are older to. I catch 99% of all games every year via radio, tv or there in person. Win or lose I'm a proud Sox fan. I get angry when we lose, excstatic when we win. Wether we are playin .300 baseball or .750, I'm down!! Beer me!!! Hey, I remeber the years of goin to the old park and you were almost guaranteed a foul ball. Now is the fun time!! Big crowds!! I hope it stays forever this way now. Good Times!!!

If the Sox don't make the playoffs, I'll have a honkin' huge credit for next year's season tickets.

If the Sox don't make the playoffs, look for them to win the WS next year since our pitchers will have that extra month of rest which somehow eluded them during the past off-season.

Obviously it's going to be a dissapointment if they miss the playoffs, but it wouldn't change my feelings about this team one bit.

Playoffs or not, this team is a very good team. There just happens to be 7 or 8 very good teams in the AL this year, and the reality is not all of them can make the postseason.

KW did what he needed to put this team in a position to make another run, and we're still very much in the hunt nearing the end of August. I don't think you can ask for much more than that. It makes me appreciate what a miracle season 2005 truly was, teams and seasons like that just don't come around that often and I'm just grateful it happend in my lifetime.

Honestly after the "magic" of last year, I'd be spoiled to expect more. The Sox of last year were truly grinders: winning games they ought to be losing, striking out batters that out to be driving in runs, etc. This year seems to be the opposite. Regardless, I sit siliently knowing that if the Sox actually find a light underneath their asses they will respond. Unfortunately, that light hasn't come yet. I guess I'm just waiting for it.

I've been a fan since 1967. In no way is this season, regardless of the outcome, a discouragement. It's been a really fun summer already; I've seen some great games and had some wonderful times at the Cell.

I'm back at the Cell next year for even more games -- going from an Ozzie Plan to a 27-game plan.

Maybe if some of the bandwaggoners jump off, I can get better seats!

I love the Sox through thick and thin. KW will right this ship. I predict the #1 and #2 hitters in our line-up will be completely different and we'll have a new SS and 2b. As far as JR, he put his money where his mouth is. The players didn't deliver. If shipping some malcontents out of town and using players in the "Nick Punto" mode is on the horizon - GREAT! Go Sox!

I will always be a fan no matter what, but that doesn't mean I like what I'm seeing now. Right now I am worried this team can be bad for a long time. If there is something seriously wrong with Contreras, Buehrle and Garcia, the Sox will start looking like the Cubs. The big difference is that we will have the cherished memories of '05. But this season is going to be a major disappointment.

I'mnot sure how you could say this is a dissapointing season............as I type this we sit at 73 - 52. I'm sure if someone told you before the 06 season that on August 23rd you'd be 21 games over .500, you'd be happy with it.

The Tigers are having a hell of a season, ya gotta tip your cap to those guys. But their amazing run shouldn't detract from what I consider to be a solid season for our guys.....face it, as much as we'd like to, we can't win the WS every single year. Baseball is very hard to repeat in, I give the Sox management & team credit for putting out a solid effort.

I have been a Sox fan for 32 years, and that isn't going to change period. All I ask from our guys is to put forth the best effort they can, and that upper management commits the resources to allow these guys a shot to win it all.

And while the division may be slipping away from us, the wildcard is in our hands. And I agree 100% with Ozzie, let's get in....then look out.

Anyway, I'll probably get banned or cyberlynched for saying this, but I think it would be a blessing in disguise if the Sox didn't make the playoffs - for several reasons. This team looks tired and defeated already, especially the starters, and its only mid-August. This team has serious holes and maybe KW and Ozzie will recognize them and act. Ozzieball worked. Let's get back to that. AND - Get those arms rested and ready for 07.

I want them to defend the championship... indeed - but, if the Sox miss the playoffs, I won't cry in my Pepsi. After all, there will ALWAY BE 2005.

But man... would it suck to miss the post season. The Twins are like the runt of the litter... and to get knocked out by them? Ugh.

Curse or blessing, I love baseball, and I love the sox. Where am I going to go?

As it stands right now , if the sox do manage to get into the playoffs, they will face the yanks.

We know we can play with the yanks. We have always matched up well against them. They seem to be the best team in baseball right now but nothing would please me more than putting them away in the playoffs.

What kind of fan will you be?? Bah. Even conjuring up this question is rubbish. If you even have to THINK about your dedication to the team if things go bad, then you're outed as a bandwagon fan. Later!

I don't feel that most of the people around here are like that at all. We yapped on this thing for hours prior to the start of the 2005 season, and there was optimism, but nobody could have expected what happened. It was all so vague and foreign to us, and that was the beauty of it. NOTHING WAS EXPECTED BEYOND THE DIVISION TITLE.

I speak for most of the Sox fans when I say that I've been following this team for a long time (though not nearly as long as others on here), and in my 23 years of actually following the Sox (since around 4 years of age), I've seen the Sox make the playoffs 4 times. FOUR. That's exactly the same number as anyone born after 1959! If you were born in the fourties or fifties, you have seen it 5 times. Call us lots of things, but don't call us a fan base that doesn't appreciate how hard it is to a.)make the playoffs and to b.)win the whole thing.

I feel happy to watch a season of baseball and refer to it as a title defense season. Expectations are raised, no doubt. However, we've been through a load of problems in our years of Sox love more than "damn, we didn't win it back to back."

If that disappointment alters your love for your boys in any way, have fun being a Yankees fan. I hear they're pretty shallow. Plus, you'll get to see 'em on ESPN a whole lot.
