"Justin, when he was coming up as a little leaguer, took No. 35 because Frank Thomas is such a great hitter and this was in his prime," Richard Verlander said. "Justin didn't forget that. When they played at Oakland, Thomas came to the plate, and Justin was telling me, 'I think to myself I'm wearing No. 35 because of him, and here I am facing him.' "

That sucks. Now I'll have to kind of like the guy, at least when he's not playing the Sox.

That's what makes this division so damn frustrating. How can you hate Santana, Liriano, or Verlander?

Their stuff is so damn electric that, as a baseball fan, you HAVE to respect them.

It was SO MUCH easier when I was a kid to hate guys like Dave Stewart, Chuck Finley, Jimmy Key, Jeff Montgomery, etc.

IIRC, McCarthy wanted to wear 35 because of Thomas, but in the end he got 55 because no other Sox player can ever wear 35. I believe 20 was his second choice so he added the 2 numbers.

As for Verlander, I can't hate him either. The only pitcher on that staff I can hate is Kenny Rogers.

True. At least it isn't hard to hate Paul Byrd, Runelvys Hernandez, Mark Redman, Brad Radke, Carlos Silva, Cliff Lee, Kenny Rogers, etc.

I do have to say though, the combination of Liriano + Santana + Contreras + Vazquez + Bonderman + Verlander + Sabathia has to be the nastiest collection of 'stuff' in any division in baseball, and this is just from a starting pitcher standpoint. If you look at closers (Jenks, Zumaya who rightfully should be closer, Nathan) it gets pretty sick too. And then all the stuff coming at you from the bullpens... I mean even KC has got some arms with big upside in Burgos and Sisco pitching right now.

That's exactly why the AL Central is the best division in baseball. No question.

I think the White Sox could get Sisco for almost nothing if we wanted another lefty. He's been really spotty, up and down between the majors and minors. Another ex-Cub, to join the list of Lohse, Willis, all the pitchers from the Marlins deal for Pierre and Garland.

If we could get Sisco for almost nothing we'd have him by now. He'd at least would be pitching in AAA.

I thought it had something to do with Orel Hershiser...or did I make that up? :?:

Santana is my favorite pitcher in the game.

Edit: That being said, I hope he gives up 12 runs on Sunday.
