NEW YORK -- Former major league general manager and player Bob Watson was hired by baseball commissioner Bud Selig on Thursday to replace Frank Robinson as the vice president in charge of discipline.

Robinson had held the post, vice president of on-field operations, for two seasons following the elimination of the American and National League presidents, who traditionally had handled fines and suspensions for on-field conduct.

Robinson last week became manager of the Montreal Expos, a team now run by the commissioner's office.

Watson, 55, also will be in charge of issues relating to time of game, uniform policy and stadium configuration.

"Bob Watson brings years of invaluable experience both as a player and executive to this position," said Sandy Alderson, executive vice president of baseball operations in the commissioner's office. "Bob's vast knowledge and understanding of the game make him the perfect choice to handle player discipline and other on-field matters."

Watson, a two-time All-Star during 19 major league seasons, was general manager of the Houston Astros in 1993 to 1995 and the New York Yankees from 1995 to 1997.

Paul Beeston, baseball's chief operating officer, has handled appeals of Robinson's decisions by the players' association. Beeston is expected to leave the commissioner's office within two months, but the union and the commissioner's office have not yet discussed who will take over hearing appeals.

If Watson were actually enabled to fullfill this position the first thing he ought to do is turn around and give Selig a thorough spanking
