Curses! O'Malley Injures Elbow.
- Poor, lovable Cubs suffer more bad luck as another pitcher is injured.
- This is why America loves the Cubs and everyone wants to go to Wrigley - because our poor lovable team is cursed and it's not their fault that they never win.

Sullivan: Analysis shows that Cubs would have won 10 pennants and 5 world championships in last 2 decades if it weren't for their curse.

Sox Fan Favorite Albert Belle Sentenced to Prison

This one is a certainty. The Trib always links Belle to the Sox, even though he only played here two years and his dastardly deeds (corked bat, criminal acts, etc.) occurred elsewhere. On the flip side, they go out of their way to make sure that the words "Rafael Palmiero" and "Chicago Cubs" never appear in the same sentence, though Palmiero was in the Cubs organization for four years and played for the Cubs in the bigs for parts of three seasons.

So? I don't see that as bias at all - it is true, it isn't a stat that is brought from out of nowhere...

Because it's a 162-game season and focusing on an artificial segment of it to suggest that the teams are equally bad (which was the context in which it was presented) is misleading. What does it matter which team had the better record from April 24 to June 6? Or how the teams compare regarding games they played on Thursdays?

What does it matter which team had the better record from April 24 to June 6? Or how the teams compare regarding games they played on Thursdays?

Because it's not too artificial - it's since the All-Star break, the recognizable halfway point of the season. Also, the Sox have not exactly been tearing through the league since the All-Star break. The statement (which I did not see live but in your original post) is true, and shows that since the AllStar break, the teams have been winning and losing about as many games in their respective leagues. Now, the more I hear about the Cubune, the more I understand and see the bias. However, in this particular statement, I see absolutely nothing wrong. It can almost be a knock on the Cubs, because the statement implies that the Sox have been sucking as much as the Cubs...

This is interesting. The headline in the print version of the Trib is extremely innocuous:
Restaurateurs mull opening near U.S. Cellular

The good folks at the Trib's on-line arm changed the headline both on the link and on the story itself to "Crime...." They didn't do this to conserve space, because the original headline is shorter than the new one.

It's good to see that George Knue remains as unbiased as ever.

I think you're misreading this. He's saying "but who will be the first?" restauranteur to open a new place.

That's possible, but I read it in conjunction with the immediately preceding sentence:
And there have been no crime statistics presented to support the notion that this area would be any more dangerous than Wrigleyville. But who will be the first?

Assuming you're correct, it's still crappy work. If Mitchell bothered to check his own company's Metromix, he'd find Trattoria 31 listed under "new restaurants":
Sox fans will be able to carb-load before the game at this new Italian spot in Bridgeport. The menu features choices like gnocchi with pesto sauce and fettuccine Alfredo with smoked apple wood bacon. Save your dough for brewskis at The Cell; they're opening BYOB while they wait for the liquor license.
It opened like 3 or 4 months ago. I'm sure that a lot of folks would like to open very close to the park, but JR and the government control all of that land and the city is very tight with liquor licenses.

The Cubune danced on the Sox grave today, and last night on the WGN news.

Still trying to find the exact day of the Cub demise, but the Cubune did not mention once that the Cubs were eliminated between Sept. 9th through the 14th in any article. The only mention of elimination was from an article dated the 11th where the Cub almost helped in eliminating the Brave from the playoffs. They did not write one line about them being eliminated, no catchy headline proclaiming their failures, no articles dedicated to their demise.

Shocking, isn't it?

If you only read the Cubune to get your baseball news, the Cub are still in the hunt to make the playoffs, the Sox were eliminated last night.

What's sadder is that the Cubs are the worst team in baseball. If you have the worst record in the AAAA league, you are the worst. Didn't hear a peep out of the Tribune, however, calling out the putridness of the team.

If you only read the Cubune to get your baseball news, the Cub are still in the hunt to make the playoffs, the Sox were eliminated last night.

That could be because the Cubs were never expected to be in the playoffs, while the Sox were. It is a suprise that the Sox are now completely out of the race to many while everyone expected the Cubs to have a terriblie record.

And just as a disclaimer, I am not in any way attempting to stick up for the Cubs with this post. Just trying to interpret the medias actions.

If you don't get the message, it's that the paper is rooting for the boys in blue and orange to get to the Super Bowl in Miami. Swell.

Pandering to the emotions of fans is not our job in journalism, although the other message the editors are sending with their banner-waving is that covering sports isn't journalism.

Morrissey: Sun-Times low class

I can't believe what I saw. The Sun-Times actually
put a Bears helmet in place of the "O" in the
sacred name of our city. I have never been so
disgusted in my entire life. My God. What utter
lowlifes. How can they disregard that most sacred
of ethical canons of journalism "thou shalt not
root for the home team"? My sense of journalistic
integrity is offended! What were they thinking?
I, for one, would never, ever root for the White
Sox. Neither would any of my colleagues. But
then again, we don't work for a tabloid. Oh, sure
we all ruined Steve Bartman's life in 2003 by
ripping him, which could be constituted as
rooting for the home team, but he was a nerd
who reached for a foul ball, so he had it coming.

One more thing before I end this article, plug
my nose and go delouse to wash off the diseases
that the Sun-Times has inflicted on me and all
good, honest journalists: the Bears might win the
Super Bowl this year. If they do, their welcome
home parade will make the White Sox parade
look like a family picnic in the park. And when
my Cubbies win it in 2007 (I know I picked 2006
because I said I had a special feeling. Well this
year I have a special, special feeling) it will make
the Bears parade seem like a family picnic in the
park! GO CUBS!

Ahem. Excuse me. I must go wash the stink of the
Sun-Times off my suit. A pity they are still in the
same city as our Bastion of Integrity. Disgraceful.

my email to mr. morrissey:

Wow.

So, you write an article about the Sun-Times rooting for the Bears by placing the Bear logo in their header?

Amazing.

So, by your standards, we should not see any bias in your writing for the Chicago Cubs, correct? I mean, the company you work for owns the Cubs. Your 401K and ESOP is directly effected by how the Cubs do, but you should show no bias in your, or anyone else writing for the Chicago Tribune?

But wait, over the years, your articles tend to stink of Cub bias. You predict they will win the division, and when they are out of it, your lemmings over at the Cubune write articles about why we should still care and keep going to the place that brings in the $$$ for your paper. The rest of your cohorts stink even worse, just look at the article written by one of your co-lemmings 2 months ago (a gem written by Jimmy Greenfield, a tribune employee) about how the 2006 White Sox season was a worse collapse than the 69 Cub. BTW, the end of the article taunts Sox fans by stating that he is a total Cub fan and how this will get him thought the winter easier knowing the Sox didn't make the playoffs.

CUB BIAS runs rampant at your paper. It is as predictable as the sun rising. So why not point that out? Why not grill Mr. Greenfield for his hack article? Why spit out an article ripping your competitor when the company you work for is notorious for being a Cub advertisement? Have you not heard your company being called the Cubune?

Yes, we know, you can't. You don't want to loose your job, or get pulled into the Cub management offices to get slapped.

You really need to apologize for this article. It makes you look like you are four years old. You are not four, right?

I expect an apology in tomorrows paper. This is the least you can do to save face.

Thanks.

LaRussa's A Champ!
Former White Sox Manager beats former White Sox coach to win World Series; second to win in both leagues

20 Years after White Sox fired him, LaRussa again on top

How stupid does Jerry Reinsdorf feel now?

June 20, 1986-Where were you?

It was a day most White Sox fans would prefer
to forget, if only we'd let them. But we won't!
It was on that day that Ken "Squawk" Harrelson,
the most clueless executive in history, fired Tony
LaRussa, the most brilliant leader and tactical
genius since the Duke of Wellington. It sent the
(Ugh. Pee-yew. Sneer.) south side franchise
down the drain and into a tailspin that we are
making sure they stay in. Now the man that
wasn't good enough for the ghetto ballpark on
the crime-ridden south side where William Ligue
cheered on his favorite team before going to
prison, is on top of the world. Jerry, we told you
so!!

But Jerry's blundering doesn't stop there. He also
gift-wrapped Magglio Ordonez to the Tigers,
with Dave Dombrowski. He also had Gene Lamont
fired. So many ex-Sox. So where were the Sox?
At home, taking in the game with William Ligue.
Have we mentioned William Ligue in the last two
days or so? No? We apologize for the oversight.

And what of Kenny Williams? The brilliant
(snicker snicker) GM of the Sox also contributed
his fair share of Cardinals. He swapped Aaron
Miles for Juan (The Kid) Uribe. Now Aaron Miles
is celebrating a World Series win, while Juan is
wanted dead or alive after using Navy officers
for target practice. HA!

But let's not be too hard on Kenny. He did try to
sign Kenny "The Cheat" Rogers a couple of years
ago, before getting A.J. "The Bigger Cheat"
Pierzynski. Seeing as the White Sox fixed the
World Series as recently as 1919, we're not
surprised that their GM is attracted to cheaters
and scum.

So now the Sox sit at home this October while
all their ex-employees celebrate.

Inside: Cardinals celebrate with ex-Sox manager LaRussa
