View Full Version : Garcia's New Split Finger pitch

A. J. just told Mike North that Freddy has been using a new pitch. Apparently Jose Contreras has taught him how to throw the split finger, and that it is working really well for him. Wow that would be great! He needs something besides a curve ball. He sure doesn't have much of a fast ball anymore. Did anyone notice him throwing it? I thought that I did, while watching the replay of the game last night.

Yeah, I noticed it yesterday. Farmer was calling it a slider, but it was dipping way too much for that. In slo-mo on TV, the ball wasn't jammed between his fingers quite as dramatically as Jose's, but it definitely looked like some kind of splittie. Whatever it was, it seemed to work pretty well.

I saw that against the Yanks. AJ was calling for the old #5, something I've never seen with Freddie. He threw two staright to Craig Wilson and Wilson feebly swung at both, striking out.

I am always leery of pitchers working a brand new pitch into their arsenal during the season, but it seems to be working for Freddy and I hope he runs with it. Maybe his velocity will come back soon also...I watched Game 4 of the WS the other day, and it was striking how much harder he was throwing, even then at the end of a long season.

If Freddy gets his velocity back next year, with the way he's had to battle this year (and the probability that he'll be playing for a contract), I think he'll have a phenomenal year.

They should work on having him take less than 45 minutes between pitches too... He needs to work faster, it's like James Baldwin was reincarnated out there...

Haha! I thought the same thing as Freddy did his "super-slo-mo" walk to the dugout after each inning. Yesterday was a typical Freddy outing: the other team scores early, Freddy throws a lot of pitches, sweats a lot and looks shaky, but somehow still grinds out a win. It must frustrate the other teams, thinking they've got Freddy on the ropes but he gets away from them. They aren't beautiful wins, but they are wins nonetheless.

now if we can just get the old Mark Buehrle back the Sox will be set to move back to the top where they belong

If you watch the highlights on whitesox.com from Sunday there is a montage of Garcia's stirkeouts they all look like the split finger. They seemed to fall off the table just like Jose's.

Freddy sure needed something hard to go with his off-speed stuff, and he wasn't throwing his fastball. A splitter is a good complement.

I took a peak at the World Series Game 7 video a few days ago. Freddy looks about 40-50 lbs. heavier now than last October. Maybe if he drops a few pounds he could get his FB back.

What does that mean? That's over and done with. He had a FB back then, and a smaller waistline.

I agree. Now, if only he could get that fastball back...

Dude - I think you're completely missing the point that there was no Game 7 in the World Series last year!

C'mon, 40 or 50 lbs? That would put him at 275- no way. more like 10-15 lbs. imo.

Freddie definitely is in his '' survival'' mode right now and I like it. He is doing what he needs to give the sox a chance.

Freddy having a split finger pitch isn't something new. He's been throwing that since he was in Seattle.

Put him on a diet, keep him out of the WBC next year and see what happens with velocity.

I think the WBC is every 4 years so keeping him out of it next year won't be much of a problem.

Are you sure? A. J. said that he has been learning it from Contreras, and that it is working for him. Mike North repeated A. J.'s quote to Don Cooper, and he didn't deny it.
I don't ever remember seeing any of Freddy's pitches moving like some of his offerings on Sunday. I also don't ever recall any commentators describing any of his pitches as a splitter.

I think he has always had a splitter, but this one dives so much it almost looks like a fork ball.

Man, how valuable is Jose? Not only is the guy the ace of the stongest rotation, top to bottom, he also picks guys up by teaching them "new" pitches. If Freddy can keep this up, setting the playoff rotation will be very difficult, which is a pretty good problem to have and he just may save his roster spot for next season.
