August 3, 1997- Sox All Star second baseman, Nellie Fox finally enters the Baseball Hall Of Fame. Fox, the 1959 American League M.V.P. was voted in by the veterans committee after missing regular election to the Hall by the fewest votes in the history of the shrine. Technically he received the 75% per cent needed by rounding out his original vote total but the Hall had no provisos for that, so his total of 74.6% per cent stood and was deemed 'short' of the 75% per cent needed. Fortunately he was finally admitted.

August 3, 2001 - Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle has thrown a lot of big games both in the regular season and in the playoffs. This may have been his best as he beats Tampa Bay 4-0 at U.S. Cellular Field. Buehrle allows only one hit, to Damian Rolls leading off the 7th inning.

I think I was at that MB game. It's the year I had season tickets and I remember him having the nono through 5 or so. Heck of a performance.

Sox 230:

I post them 24 hours in advance.

Tomorrow, for example, I'll post the three items for August 4th.

These threads always rule!

Nellie got hosed in 1985, his last year on the BBWAA ballot, when he got 74.67% of the vote and the Hall of Fame refused to recognize the fact that it should have been rounded to 75%, insisting instead on a "pure" 75% and leaving him 2 votes short.

When he finally was elected by the Veterans' Committee, Cubune smartass Steve Rosenbloom wrote that the Nellie Fox Society was going to re-form itself as the Dan Pasqua Society, suggesting that Fox did not deserve entry.

It would have been a travesty if Fox wasn't elected to the hall. I still have that commemerative HOF poster of Nellie that they gave out at Comiskey in '97.

It's a shame that Billy Pierce and Minnie Minoso can't join him in Cooperstown. Does anyone know if Pierce is out of chances to be elected by the veteran's commitee? His numbers are definitely HOF worthy in my opinion. If he had the NY logo on this jersey instead of the S-O-X he'd probably already be there.:(:

Foulke:

Unfortunately Billy's chances are gone and with Minnie being passed over by the 'special committee' chaired by Fay Vincent (who vetoed Minnie getting into a game in 1990, pissing off Reinsdorf who eventually was one of the leaders in removing him as commissioner) I think his chances are zero as well.

No question Billy should be there.
