Excellent win. Got a little hairy there at the end, but Riske manned up and got us where we needed to go. Super job Riske, Alomar, and all the team.

Bad thing about tonight? Paul Konerko's health

responding to something at the end of the gamethread:

Meh, one outing and a jack here.

7.94 ERA in July with a 2.12 WHIP and .326 BAA

9.95 ERA post break with a 2.68 ERA and a .357 BAA.

not worried yet because the guy has only two blown saves on the year.

but this really has to make you even more happy that we went out and picked up MacDougal before the deadline.

This seemed like the kind of game the Sox were going to blow late, having left too many scoring situations un-taken-advantage-of. And then Thornton with the uncharacteristically bad luck. But they battled back, got some awesome relief from Riske, and enough bad defense by the Royals + clutch hits to put this thing away in the 10th. IMO, a must-win game that they snatched back from the jaws of defeat.

I'd give Riske the PTC. Excellent job by him tonight. It pays to have a deep bullpen.

Also, Bobby has struggled w/ KC this year it seems. Gave up a HR today, blew a save against them earlier and gave up a HR in April. Well maybe that isn't exactly struggling but its curious none the less.

Can't complain about a win. They just delayed the inevitable. Nice outing for Buehrle. Baby steps for him and the team. Sweep tomorrow and get in gear for the real competition coming up.

Good win today. Riske was unhittable out there. Great games from Buerhle, Crede, and Sandy as well.

It's good to see the Sox scoring runs via methods other than the home run.

Facing KC pitching is allowing the hitters to regain their confidence. This is good.

Buehrle pitched well enough to deserve the win. If he returns to his old self for the stretch drive it will be a huge lift for the Sox.

Thornton deserves a mulligan. Same with Jenks in giving up the solo homer. All's well that ends well.

Riske really came up huge tonight.

The Sox keep pace with Detroit and increase their lead over Minny.

Let's get the sweep tomorrow!

Back to a virtual tie for second best record in baseball! Just percentage points behind the Yankees.

Nice outing by Mark. Hopefully he can duplicate the performance next week.

McDougal and Riske were impressive out of the pen.

Lots of positives on the offensive side. HUGE games for Crede and Alomar.

Now we just need to hope Konerko is ok or tonight could turn into a downer.

Mark appeared to look much better this evening.

Tell me about the Konerko HBP. Was it a ball that got away from someone or could it have been retaliation for last night where Jose hit that guy on the shoulder?

Mark got some solid D too. All three outs in the third inning were shots and good picks by the defense. Buehrle deserves some pick me up from the team for all that he has done over the years.

HUGE, HUGE, HUGE win for the Sox tonight. We needed this win against a sub-par opponent. Burls has been struggling and he didn't throw bad tonight. He scared me in the first, but then he settled down more. I agree with MacDougal being a huge pick-up. We now have 2 set-up men who could be closers on some teams to set-up Jenks.

Sweep would be huge, means we're guaranteed to gain ground from these last 3 games. It's like tennis when you have to chip and charge to go for the slam. We're chipping and charging now to cut into that lead the Tigers have before we face them.

Character win tonight. Could have easily folded it up after Thorton's troubles. Even against KC this is a nice win. Keep it up. I got a hunch either NY or Detroit will loose tomorrow. Hopefully we can head up to the land of maple on a high note with a sweep.

Well, I've completed my two-game stint here in Kansas City. I was glad to see two victories. I'll be making my way back to Chicago in the morning. I trust the weather is much cooler back home.

The most important thing tonight was Buerhle settling in and pitching a good game. Ozzie got him out at the right time too, making sure he left the mound feeling good about what he accomplished.

Are we still advocating Thornton for closer?

What a game. True Ozzieball in its form tonight.

08-02-2006, 11:21 AM
I guess Ozzie had decided before the game even started Buehrle wasn't going more than six tonight. I had some mixed feelings about him leaving at that time as he was rolling. But it's probably right to take it easy with him--this time, at least--and build that into a 7 or 8 inning start for him next time.

Most gratifying thing about this game for me was that Buerhle settled down so well after a rocky first. Reminded me of the good ol' days.

Keep it up.

JOE CREDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SuperJoe is just raking right now.

He was struggling til the other day when he got that line drive to right.
Same with AJ.

It just seems like a constant battle for hitters to stay inside. They start going to opposite field , their swing comes together, they start raking, then start pulling and then it goes bad.

But Joe has been able to shorten his slumps this year.

Riske said today that he finally found his arm slot last nite. Now stay there!!

C'mon Freddie- we need ya tonite.

Maybe Sandy was the answer to Mark's problems. DJ and Hawk were talking how Sandy was moving around a lot behind home plate, giving a target for Mark to hit.

Actually, they said that Sandy should stay put in the middle of the plate. Hawk also didn't care for Sandy looking at Ozzie in the dugout for what pitch to call.
