I think this is a good column by Phil. He tries to put things into perspective.

Before we start worrying about Wild Card standings, perhaps we can win a series? Two games in a row?

It's all about the playoffs. Get in where you can. If you have to fight for it and you get in, you're ALWAYS in better shape than cruising into the playoffs. The stats don't lie.

The Sox of last year were pretty much like a wild card team last year, as they had to scrap the last month to secure the division. It carried over into the playoffs.

With the mental aspect of baseball (which is what dictates 75% of a team's success), you can turn your season around on a dime. This can happen the last week of July or the last week of September. There's a lot of baseball left, and the Sox will have a fight on their hands.

If they get into the playoffs, no matter which way, they'll be ready for prime time.

Or, as Too $hort would say, get in where you fit in. There is no shame at all in winning the WC. There is shame in conceding the division race in July. Lets reconvene in a month.
