Best of luck to Chris. He was an amazing story in 2005 and did a great job last year as well.

Yep, per PGI Ozzie says "He gawn......."

Also said Kenny will be deciding soon (as in tomorrow) what will happen with b/u catcher.

Sorry Widge, I am sure there is an awesome softball team that could use ya.

You don't DFA someone unless you're bringing someone in. You don't cut your backup catcher unless you have another backup catcher.

When the Mariners let their starting catcher go home to Japan a day before the All-Star break, they called up a minor league backup for that Sunday game. Some teams go with three catchers. Most go with two, but no one goes into a game with only one catcher.

Hmmmmm..... Just total speculation here, but is it possible that there is also some kind of pitching move about to take place also involving Haeger coming back up? From what I've heard Stewart does a good job handling the knuckleball.

Either that, or I hope KW just got Zaun or Javy Lopez...

EDIT: I was misinformed regarding Stewart catching Haeger. Apparently he only has caught one of Haeger's starts. Matos usually catches Haegar.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say a Molina brother.... Considering all catchers are Molina's my odds are pretty good... :D: Ha honestly if we don't go the internal route, my bet is something crazy like Victor Martinez.... they're backed up with catchers like us... plus they got another one just 2 days ago by trading Wickman

Now that I think about it it isn't so crazy to think it might be Victor.... He could catch on days we face lefties... and occasionally play first when we face righties to spell Konerko.... Making Gload expendable...

eurotrash35
07-23-2006, 03:50 PM
I hope that if it's not Stewart it's somebody coming in as a throw-in. Doesn't make much sense to go out looking for a backup now, especially some of the names being thrown out.

I have a feeling there's going to be a trade coming within the next 24 hours and a catcher will be a throw-in as part of the deal.
I don't like the idea of a pennant run with a rookie back-up catcher and I doubt Kenny and Ozzie would like that idea either.

Yes, but a winner can go to the postseason with a journeyman backup. The Angels had Josh Paul in last year's ALCS.

I don't think anyone ever denied that Widger was a problem. I mean, the guy was batting .000 in July and only had two hits since late in May. The team had lost the last five or six games he had started. The question was whether Widger was enough of a problem to warrant trading a prospect to get a replacement, and the fact that some people seemed to be blaming ALL the team's woes on Widger at times.

[half teal]Anything to get Mackowiak ABs elsewhere besides CF is fine with me[/half teal]

Seriously, the Sox don't need a backup catcher to hit; they need a backup catcher to play decent defense and more importantly work well with the pitchers. Widger's catcher's ERA was quite a bit higher (more than a full run, IIRC) than A.J.'s. To make up for that, he'd have to average more than an RBI per game played. The fact that he hit less than .200 only made things worse.

I didn't particularily care for Widge either, I wondered out loud what our record was between him starting a game and AJ, there is a YUGE difference between being a problem and the problem. I have a feeling that this is a part of a bigger picture, and we have yet to see the next chess move by KW. Something big is coming.

Yeah, that worked out real well for them.

That was my point about Josh Paul. I think Widger caught only at the end of World Series Game 3 in the postseason. Guillen didn't rest players at all after the last weekend in Cleveland. Widger had an RBI, walking with the bases loaded to score Rowand. Widger struck out and walked earlier in the game. He might have been in position to score the go-ahead run earlier, but Podsednik bunted into a double play.

Les Moss, by the way, turned 81 this year. I don't know if his knees are as scarred from years of catching (some with the St. Louis Browns) as Ed Herrmann's are.

Miguel Olivo has more pop in his bat than Widger, has a better arm than AJ and may have grown up some since leaving the Sox. A deal seems imminent (and maybe even a backup plan for a backup catcher if the deal falls though). Florida might be a team willing to deal fairly with the Sox.

But that is pure speculation.

Well when you completely ignore all the positive aspects he brings, you can say anything you want and it sounds true.

No, his negative attitude, poor defense, and status as a free agent at the end of the year wouldn't help the team. For that matter, nor would his inability to take a walk.

HOWEVER, he is comparable to Pods in LF (believe it or not) is a good baserunner (and since Pods hasn't been lighting it up as much as we might like on the base paths it's not a huge downgrade) and...well...has a ****load of power and can hit for average. So.... yeah

whether his "attitude problems" outweigh all that, and whether it is worth it to get rid of mccarthy for a reasonably big upgrade in the lineup is very very contestable...but please don't act like acquiring a bat like soriano could not possibly make this a better team.

Well when you completely ignore all the positive aspects he brings, you can say anything you want and it sounds true.

No, his negative attitude, poor defense, and status as a free agent at the end of the year wouldn't help the team. For that matter, nor would his inability to take a walk.

He might actually be a better Lf than Pods.

Let's also not forget if we were to get Soriano, we could get two draft picks for him.

Has anyone mentioned Spanky LaValliere? How about Marc Hill?

How did this thread turn into a debate over the Soriano runours? :?:

So long and best wishes, Chris Widger.

Or my personal favorite: Jorge Fabregas.

I am sure Widger is a nice guy, but this statement kills me:

"Right now, I'm not sure what else to say," Widger said. "I go out there to play hard every day, and I didn't see it coming. It caught me by surprise."

How in the world could he be surprised by this move? He has been absolutely horrible this year.

****.

The whole Widger situation was one of my favorite storylines of last year. From playing softball to catching for the World Champions.

Oh well. Thanks for everything you did in 2005, Widger. Enjoy that ring you helped earn.

Widger flat out sucked and Alomar is the best option at this point. He did a terrible job calling games as made evident by the team's record when he started, couldn't hit for **** and obviously wasn't wanted any longer. I think KW, Ozzie and the Sox coaches know a whole hell of a lot more about we do in regards to the team's catching needs. So for anyone doubting these two moves:

"This was a specific request, and I followed suit and made the acquisition," Williams said. "The coaches thought at this juncture of the season, with Sandy's experience, especially with certain members of our staff, combined with his ability to give us quality at-bats against tough left-handers and move runners and put bunts down, it was a definite upgrade.

"We think Sandy has done a great job of keeping himself in shape, and he's not going to have to play regularly. Sandy has been after me for two years to bring him back. I don't have to ask him how he feels about it."

He was surprised about the reason given. He would've accepted if he was told he wasn't producing. He was told that the team didn't like his preparation. He wasn't told it was because of his poor play.

It's too bad this happened, but he wasn't getting it done. Hopefully, Alomar can get it done.

they just showed him in the clubhouse on NBC saying goodbye to players and addressing the situation. Very sad, I wish i didnt see that.

Poor Widge. This is probably the end of his ML career. Maybe some independent league team will pick him up. Mike Marshall spent a year with the Schaumburg Flyers.

Oh, that's sad.

Poor Widge, I know he wasn't doing well this year, but I still feel bad for him. I hope someone picks him up or he goes to play for an independent league.

I don't know if the players get to read this or not but, I just wanted to thank Widge for his part in helping us win the World Series last year.

Widge is from Wilmington, Delaware which is a hop, skip, and a jump from where I live in MD now. There is alot of talk about him and Kevin Mench who is also from around here.

It felt kinda good to have a native of where I'm living now on my favorite team. The softball team he played on, the Camden Riversharks are also not too far away in Camden, NJ.

We wanted to count on you this year so we can repeat, but you've continually let us down. That's just not World Championship material. We really appreciate what you did for us last year, but that was 2005 and this is 2006. Widge, please understand that this is not personal, it's business. You're a great guy, but NOT the kind that will keep this organization afloat until the end of October...
and Chris... YOU'RE FIRED!"

Thank you for what you did for us, Chris...Good Luck in your future... NOW GO!!!

Last year was a great story, and from what I hear you were great in the clubhouse, but you weren't helping the team with your play this year and it's a business....He got his ring and a great story that I'm sure he can sell the rights to HBO or Disney to make one helluva a movie!
