View Full Version : All it takes is a gain of one game per week on Detroit...!

..on average, and the Sox will win the Division by three games.

That does not seem so difficult. Does it?

And if you think I am being a pollyanna, I made a similar post last year to those who thought the Sox had it wrapped up in early July: to wit, that Cleveland only had to gain a game per week to catch the Sox. And they came within a half a game at one point.

Anyway, I am not conceding things yet and will only start thinking about the wild card in September if the Sox are way back.

It's becoming obvious that if no other teams are gonna step up and play the Tigers well, we have to beat the Tigers every time, or settle for the wild card. But the main thing is just to play well and see what happens. There's this crazy panic that " oh no!, the sox may not win it all again !!" that sounds absurd coming from a chicago baseball fan. everyone just needs to relax.

It doesn't take that long. For some reason people think Detroit is just going to keep on winning and never go on a losing streak. Well, they gained ground on us while we weren't playing well, we'll gain it back when they don't play well. Just stay close and don't dig too deep of a hole...and as of now, 6.5 is not very deep. That's 6 losses by Detroit and 6 wins by us, which is definately feasible considering how many games are left and how Detroit has played all year. If they do somehow keep this up, you just have to tip your cap, because that is one remarkable season.

I can't beleive Detroit is not going to hit a funk at some point in time. Actually, Minnesota has been just about as ridiculously hot as Detriot. They play each other next week and something has got to give. Maybe the Twinkies will drive them into a tailspin.

Here's hoping that today starts a 10 game winning streak for our Sox.

As long as we get it to 3 1/2 or under that by the time they come to the Cell in mid-August, I think we'll be in good shape.

Luckily, I don't think we get to face Liriano when Minny comes to town next week as well.

You wouldn't deem the '05 playoff berth 'backing in'? In my mind, there isn't really much else you could call it.

You won't unless there's a rain out or something in Cleveland this weekend, which I'm hoping for.

It'll be Radke, Santana and Silva for the Sox series. Silva looked really bad today.

I could see the Sox jumping out to a 4 or 5 to nothing lead in the first against him, and then hanging on. The Sox will probably lose to Santana, then beat Silva like a redheaded stepchild, taking two of three.

You cant believe Detroit can have a tailspin, huh? How bout the Sox last year. Or Boston in 78. And the 06 Sox are not done yet. You just have to tip your hate to the Tigers so far, but their time is coming

You want to keep Detroit's lead under about 9 games if you want to win the division. An old rule-of-thumb, IIRC was that if you had a double-digit lead in the standings after the All-Star break, you win. There have been some exceptions, but they were dramatic. Cubs in '69, Phillies in '64. When the Sox almost lost their 15-game lead last year, the snickering by Cub fans and general Sox-haters about "the greatest collapse in baseball history by far" was palpable (I love that word). You remember Eric Zorn, don't you?

So yeah, go a few games further back and it would take a collapse by Detroit for the Sox to take the Central. But we're still in the WC lead. And this year in the AL, there is absolutely no shame in making the playoffs as a WC, if there ever is. I don't care how we get to the playoffs just so long as we do.

Huh? I actually was predicting Detriot would hit a tailspin if you read my post.

When Tiger fans and Twins fans start posting here you know we aren't in the position we should be. :o: I dont mind the banter however....just remember we are totally biased here!!!!

I hate to say it, but I think we may be in a bit of trouble if the lead reaches 9 games. As much confidence as I have in the team, I'm not sure if the players (and WSI posters) would be able to handle being down by 9 games. I'm not saying that if it does reach 9 games then we're finished, but let's hope it stays a bit under 9 games.

The month of august is where I think we should get a lot of games back....looking at detroits scheldue----min-us-bos-tex-us(4)-cle-ny

while we get a little bit of kc-det-tb-and min and ny

I beleive that will be make or break time although we do have the whole month of september...so basically we have plenty and enough time left to catch those dam tigers

WS:

You have a valid point if the Sox take care of business against the 'bad' teams. They have had trouble with them this season as you know and Ozzie one time called them out over it. Plus having to play Detroit, Minnesota and the Yankees isn't exacetly chopped liver.
