Red Sox agreed to terms with RHP Josh Beckett on a three-year, $30 million contract extension with a club option for 2010.
Beckett, who had been eligible for free agency after 2007, gets a $2 million signing bonus, $6 million in 2007, $9.5 million in 2008 and $10.5 million in 2009. The club option is worth $12 million and becomes guaranteed if Beckett makes 28 starts in 2009 or he has a total of 56 starts in 2008 and 2009. Otherwise, the Red Sox can exercise a $2 million buyout. While Beckett remains a major health risk going forward, we like this one for the Red Sox. They weren't going to be able to find a similarly talented pitcher willing to take such a short deal if Beckett left as a free agent.

I made this point before:

Anyone else see the trend?

I pointed this out to Jjav after his crappy outing against the Yanks.

Teams crush him after seeing him once, with the exception of the crappy National League.

Does anyone here think he is worth a 3 year $30 million commitment?

Yes. Garland got $9/per and his buddy A.J. got $11m+. That's the going rate for decent pitching

Beckett has taken over for Kerry Wood as the most overrated pitcher in baseball. He had the great playoff run in 2003, but hasn't been able to stay healthy. His ERA is north of five and he can never stay healthy. But I guess Garland and Burnett got $10 million per. I cant wait to see what Zito gets.

Yes. Look at what Vazquez is making.

Yes. Look at what Vazquez is making.

You can thank the Yankees for that.

But...again, I still think he will show his worth and turn his season around. All of you haters will be on the Vazquez-bandwagon by the end of the year.

Anyway, Beckett continues to be an overrated pitcher after his performance in the 2003 playoffs.

Absolutely. It's only 3 years, which isn't that long of a commitment. And $10 million is a rather good deal for the Red Sox when you consider what guys like Burnett, Vazquez, Garland, etc. are making. Yeah, the 2nd time around thing is rather disturbing right now, but give it time. I know you think Beckett is awful because he pitched in the NL, but it's been half a year. See me in 2 years. If he's still posting an ERA near 5, I'll admit you're right and I'm wrong. But I'm fairly confident I won't be doing that.

I cant wait to see what Zito gets.

Zito's actually great, unlike Beckett, who's a shade above serviceable. It will be interesting, IMHO.

I think this was a good deal for the Red Sox when you consider what Burnett and Milwood made on last year's market. Beckett has proved to be inconsistent and injury-prone, but has also proved he is a big-game pitcher. If he has a good year next year, he would have been able to probably get $15 mil on the open maket.

Epstein was quoted as saying Boston wanted to lock him up before somebody else set the market for him

Beckett agrees to three-year extension (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2006/07/20/beckett_signs_deal_to_remain_through_2009) (Boston Globe, 7/20/06)

It's not a good deal or bad deal- it's a market deal, especially since he actually hasn't missed a bunch of starts this year. The pitching market is inflated and Beckett's salary falls right in line. If you told me that for $1 million extra per year, the Sox could have Beckett instead of Garland, I would take that.

Ehh...I'd take Gar, for the fact that he eats up innings. Beckett has playoff pedigree, but never thrown over 200 innings/year. Garland has done it the last two years, averaging 205 innings over the past four years. that kind of pitching durability is a steal at 9 mil.

I'll take Garland at 8 or 9 over Beckett at 10. He's our guy, he has no affection for the DL, and even when not pitching well, usually gives innings.

I wasn't convinced that these Marlins pitchers were that great last summer, and I'm still not.
