You hate to use the terms "urgency" or "must win" in July when a team is 23 games over .500, but the Sox really need to take to this series. At least to bring all the dark clouds back in off the ledge. 6:05PM approacheth!
Go get 'em!

I know people keep saying it's early but, this series is a must-win in July. Yes I said it, a MUST win.

With the way Detroit has been playing we were having a hard time catching them in June when we were only 1 1/2 games back. Heck, we were having a hard time catching them when we were a 1/2 game back. They seem to keep pace with us. If we win they win etc.

To put things in perspective, If we lose this series 2 games to 1, that would leave us 5 1/2 games back. God forbid it but, if we were to get swept we would be 7 1/2 games back.

Yes, I know we still have a ton of games with them and if we were to lose this series there would be time to catch them. But, if we were to fall back further and further that would put even bigger pressure on those other series with Detroit.

I know we saw a 15-game lead evaporate to Cleveland in the final two months last season. But, that was last season and it's over now. Just because it happened that way last season doesn't mean the same thing will happen between us a Detroit this year.

This isn't dark clouding either. Just wanted to look at a couple of different scenarios that's all. I like preparing for the worst because it makes the victories that much sweeter.

I hope we go in there and take at least take 2 of 3. This looks to be a fun series. It makes it exciting that both teams have so much to play for in July. I mean, I'm glad we're even having this conversation. What does KC, Pittsburgh, or even the Flubs have to play for in July? NOTHING.

GO WHITE SOX!!!!!!!!!! GET THOSE TIGERS!!!!!!!!!

I'll be honest I feel this series will dictate alot of what will happen for the rest of the season and possibly the next few seasons. If the Sox come out and play as they have the past week or so it may cause KW to do something irrationally and overpay for average talent at the deadline. If we come like we can and able to it might force Detroit to sell the farm and hamper their future for success this season. I know your all thinking i'm crazy for thinking like that but a series of this magnitude so close to the deadline in a sellers market makes it a reality.

What I meant was basically if Detroit sweeps they may feel like they don't need to get a Soriano or Abreu which would cost them top prospects and/or current roster players. Where as KW might feel urgency and make the mistake of Anderson and Mccarthy for Schmidt. With the opposite scenerio being the Sox take 2 or all 3 Detroit might feel like they need Soriano or Abreu and overpay, and KW could feel confident and not make such a deal.

Your argument makes sense but, I think KW is too smart to mortgage our ENTIRE future on one season. Give him more credit that that.

Dombrowski came out of the White Sox system and he has proven so far that he is a pretty good GM and I think he's too smart to "sell the farm". I wouldn't complain though if he overpaid for some mediocre talent and handicapped the Tigers franchise though.

I don't know if any reply can possibly live up to the brilliance of bookending eyerolls, but I'll try anyhow.

If the Sox get swept and KW responds to it by overpaying for someone (giving up McCarthy in the process) it certainly could. If the Tigers get swept (particularly if they score very little in the series) and give into irrational deadline thinking and do something like trade Zumaya to pick up another bat it surely could. And a sweep in an atmosphere like this has been known to make baseball people do funny things this time of year. Remember the Tigers haven't been in a race in over a decade, and KW is the same GM who picked up Robbie Alomar 2 straight deadlines. Neither team is infallible and the psychological effects of a sweep could easily influence thinking in the front office. Honestly I would say this is a bigger threat for Detroit though. We have the cushion of having won it last year. Detroit I'm sure is feeling that same "win at all costs" mentality that a lot of folks here were feeling last season around this time.

I don't see the entire future going, it's not like KW would try and swing an Alex Rodriguez for Fields, McCarthy, Sweeney, Liotta, Broadway, Anderson trade. But it could easily lead to overpaying for a middle relief guy. Or giving up an unnecessary extra prospect or two for a SP.

I agree on Dombrowski, but sometimes you do things as a GM because it will keep the fanbase going. If the Sox were to sweep DET and send them into a slump the momentum the franchise has in Detroit right now could easily slow greatly, and Dombrowski could be easily tempted to make a big splash trade to keep the fanbase positive. Not a bad trade mind you, as I doubt he would trade Verlander and Zumaya for Gil Meche. But the kind of trade that nominally helps you for 60 games and haunts you for years as a guy turns out to be a very good player.

Eyerolls are all the response that was warranted. Do you honestly believe either team will make some insane trade that will have sweeping ramifications on both organizations for years to come because they got swept in one series? I know I sure don't.

Detroit has the best record in baseball and even if they get swept this series, they will still hold that title.

I am feeling good right now. I think we have a shot of defining ourselves over the next three games. This isn't a make it or break it, but a statement must be made. Something to remind Detroit that no matter what they do the rest of the time, they still have to take this crown from us.

We need to plan. Without a plan, there's no attack. Without attack, no victory.

Heavens no! These teams have never made mistakes at the deadline before! Funny that the Tigers are involved in this discussion since the last time they made a rather innocuous looking deadline trade way back in 1987 the guy they shipped off is still pitching at a high level. Sure at the time Doyle Alexander seemed like a hell of a move, it even helped them win the division that year. And they just gave up some mid-level prospect named John Smoltz.

The trade doesn't have to be insane. All it has to be is unnecessary or overbalanced towards the other side.

The issue isn't whether or not the Tigers will make a trade. The issue is if the Tigers get swept, will they make some knee-jerk trade. And the answer to that question is NO. They don't need to. They will still have the best record in the majors heading into this weekend. If they did anything, it would be some bench player or something like that ala Geoff Blum from last year. Their starting pitching is amazing and there is no way they are going to bust that up for a bat or anything else.

Tonite is a big game as Jon is our hottest pitcher right now and losing it could make this an ugly series.

I like the sox chances tonite and on Wed against the suddenly leaking Kenny Rogers.

But what I like it how the texas series sets up with the rangers at Toronto, then have to go to Boston for one makeup game on thursday and then to chicago for their 9th,10th and 11th game in a row. We get Wasdin,Koronka, and Paddilla(payback time) this weekend. They will have a tired bullpen after getting squashed last nite against the jays and 3 more games against potent offenses before they hit chicago.

Meanwhile the A's follow the sox into detroit-A's give them trouble, and then the tigers go to Cleveland and minny for road series.

It will be yet another opportunity for the tigers to cool off. Lets hope they grab that opportunity this time.

Last year, whenever I was in doubt during the postseason, I always lurked around here to build my confidence. It's nice we're doing it again this year. I feel supremely confident going into this series. GO SOX!!!!!!!!

I'm a nervous wreck.

Same here. My nerves could really use a White Sox blowout.

I think people are making this series to be a little bit bigger than it actually is. Sure its an important series, but even if Detroit were to sweep us we are still going to have a great chance to make the playoffs. Don't forget we still play Detroit 10 more times after this series. It would be a huge series for us to take, but no need to panic if we don't.

I see us taking Thursday night. I see them taking Wed. night as I have no confidence at all in Vazquez to come up big against any sort of competent offense. Tonight is the hinge in my opinion. Take tonight and maybe the momentum lets us win a slugfest tomorrow and get a chance to take the series on Thursday. Lose tonight and suddenly you're looking at our weakest pitcher having to stop a losing streak to keep us from being in a position to possibly get swept ourselves.

I have that feeling I had in late sept last year waiting to get through work for the game in the evening..

LETS GO SOX!!!!!
Play Smart, Pitch well... WIN!!!

..oh yeh a Thome slam wouldnt hurt either...

It's not nearly how excited I was for those Indians games last year. Maybe it's too early in the season, but it just seems like another series to me.

Maybe its the day off, maybe its trying to rid the stain that was the past 6 games.

Thinking of this as the real kickoff to the 2nd half..

It's still July but division games with your closest rival are always the biggest games of the year. Cuz I don't give a **** about a wild card berth.

And Miami will once again own the BSU Cardinals!! Go Skins!!

Hopefully there will be some southsiders to celebrate a White Sox Winner out here in Orange County, Ca tonight.

My buddy the Tigers fan just opened a channel of communications.

His prediction is the same as mine: Sox take 2 of 3. Honestly, Tigers fans are almost EXPECTING to lose. It's really hard to work up a hate for that team.

I'm really pumped up for this series, I got my wisdom teeth removed this morning, and the surgeon told me to take it easy for three days, so I don't have to work evenings at Baskin Robbins till Friday.:bandance: I feel that the offense will get their heads out of their butts this time, and we'll coming back to the Cell 1.5 games back, and we'll be in first by next week.:supernana::gulp:

Ouch! Dentists! Hope you feel better soon.

And let's keep this our little secret, but watching this series probably isn't what the oral surgeon had in mind when he said, "Take it easy."

The pain isn't that bad, it sort of feels like getting braces on for the first time without all the metal.

Earlier I said I would be watching a movie instead, and I meant it. Now, 90 minutes before gametime, I'm pumped and ready for a White Sox victory. Go Garland.

I couldn't watch the game tonight, because it was my wife's birthday and I had to go out, but I thought it was just as well. I wasn't sure my heart could have taken it. Sounds like it was pretty one sided. If we keep this up, the Tigers are going to get some type of complex! Maybe their equipment manager should order shirts with bigger neck sizes; the ones they have now seem to be CHOKING them a little bit!
