You can't play Keystone Kops out there like the Sox did in the 4th and expect to win too often at a place like Yankee Stadium. Plus there were other problems. The team simply didn't have their heads in the game today from start to finish.

Ozzie, I'm sure, is ripping into them right now. The good news is, they usually bounce back after a particularly atrocious game. Hope that's the case now.

It's not late, but it's not early either. Time to right the ship.

Last year everyone wanted to get rid of Crede and get Randa. Then PK was worthless (I was part of that crowd). Then we heard "we can't win with no trades. Who the Heck is Blum? KW is an idiot!

We had our lead dwindle down and it was panic city. We won the WS, so come on people, baseball is a long grinding season. We're due for some games like this. It helps to galvanize the team and get them pointed the right way.

Remember last October watching the celebrations? Didn't each and every one of us just feel like 'hey, these guys really know what they're doing and know how to run an organization'? They know what they're doing and have the best talent in the league.

this is from yahoo and doesn't include today:

Pitch 1-15:
12.2 IP 2.84 ERA 1.66 WHIP .321 BAA

Pitch 16-30:
18.1 IP 7.85 ERA

He settles down after that, but those are some pretty bad numbers.

overall he's got a BAA is the high .280s after today, I think. That's just awful.

It wasn't that they got hammered, that happens... but the way they are playing...not covering bases, dropping relay throws and this has been going on the entire season.

Ozzie has talked about it often this year. Stressing that the team is not executing fundamentals. What ever happened to Ozzie-ball?

Sounds like they been seduced by the home run siren. And that brings back painful memories of 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004.

Did somebody pour sugar in your gas tank or something?

I most certainly did not get any sugar in my gas tank today, but I agree with him. I have absolutely no confidence going into our series with Detroit, and I can't imagine how anyone pulling for the Sox could.

Here is everything I used to think about the AL Central race: the Tigers were not really as good as their record, they couldn't beat good teams like NY and Boston, and they would eventually fade.

Now, after losing 4 of 5 in embarrassing fashion and standing 4 games back, I think all of the above can more accurately be said of the White Sox.

I think I'm going to be sick.

Bizzaro World Rules dictate that the White Sox salvage the third game of the series.

Hopefully this series serves as a wake-up call and the Sox get games like this out of "their system".

Mr. White Sox
07-15-2006, 09:48 PM
Question:
From looking at the box score, Sox pitching gave up six walks and Bankee pitching only one. Was this because of:

a) more crappy umpiring
b) poor pitcher control / great pitcher control
c) poor plate patience

if c, the Sox hitters need to take some more damn pitches. Pods and Konerko do just fine in that regard, but I've noticed in some recent games that Sox hitters will often swing at the first pitch against a pitcher with notoriously poor control.

Jurr
07-15-2006, 10:24 PM
The Sox have to find that "happy place" again. The same damn thing happened last year around trade rumor time. The whole crew started looking over their shoulders, wondering who was going to get traded. Everything went south. However, the team came around.

This year, however, it looks like the Sox need a kick in the pants, and I think this loss might have helped more than hurt. Everybody has always gunned for the Yankees and now the Red Sox. The White Sox are not used to having the friggin' Yanks and Sawx gunning for them. Last year, the Sox came out with guns blazing, lookking to prove that they belonged amongst the top teams. That eagerness to prove isn't there. And, if it is, the pitching isn't showing it. Please, please, puhhhlease let this trade deadline get over with quickly.

Lip Man 1
07-15-2006, 11:37 PM
Jurr:

But considering what they went through last August / September how could they not understand / know how it feels to be the hunted?

I think this season has been a combination of 'being the hunted', fatigue, World Series hangover and a certain amount of (based on what I was told by one of the club's beat writers) 'taking bad teams for granted' (and then having it shoved up their rear ends.

All of these things fall under Ozzie's domain.

I'm curious why he hasn't 'gone off' yet with a full blown tirade. In my mind it's way, way overdue with these guys.

Getting beat is one thing...that I understand. Getting embarassed, making mental mistakes, dropping balls, not covering bases is something totally different. There is no excuse for that type of effort, be it little league or major league.

we were lucky to win 1 vs boston. Theyve played like garbage for a while now. Yep. They have played poorly the entire year, but they have been playing like absolute **** the last few weeks. I don't know if they think 05 hasn't ended, if they think the championship will be handed to them, or what. They have played like **** for a long time, and there doesn't a sense of urgency. They gave up 8 runs? It's ok, we scored 11. The offense is humiliated by a ****ty lefty? No biggy, we will score in bunches tomorrow.

The hitting has been inconsistent, the fielding has been inconsistent, and the pitching has been absolute garbage. KW has assembled far and away the best pitching staff in baseball. Mediocrity should not be accepted. We are not paying pitchers $9+ a year to have ERAs over 4, let alone 5. While Detroit is overachieving extremely with its pitching staff, ours is underachieving. The Reds or Devil Rays can be pleased with a 4.47 team ERA, but that is not acceptable considering the talent we have.

Before last Saturday's game with Boston, I saw an interview with AJ that really bothered me. He said "oh, this year has been so great, etc... but the fans get on us when we lose. They have to understand, we are doing really good, but we can't win every game."
Absolute bull****. That is a horrible attitude to have. We have played like crap the entire year, and considering the pitching we have gotten, we are lucky to have the record we do. There is always room for improvement, and that goes especially for how we played lately. The Sox should not be pleased with how they have played this year. They should be angry, and they should be embarrassed of how they have played lately. Making errors is not acceptable. Giving up 8 runs to the Orioles twice is not acceptable. Getting owned by crappy lefties is not acceptable.

I have been pretty critical of the team this year. I have said all along "They are winning, but they still haven't clicked. Watch out when they do." Even when we went on our 9 game streak, I was upset with our performance. I was unhappy with the sloppy, uninspired ball we had played. I am no longer confident this team will "click". This team has had all year to play well, to start clicking on all cylanders, but they haven't done it. Why should I be confident they will be able to turn it on like a light switch? It seems to me this team knows they are the best, and they are just waiting around to get hot, expecting they will soon be clicking.

Pitching wins championships. Teams don't slug their way to a title. Our hitting will inevitably cool off a little. If our pitching doesn't pick up, we will be a lot closer to the Reds than Red Sox. This team is at a turning point. If the pitching improves and plays up to its ability, we will win the division by 8 games. If the pitching stays the same or digresses, we will finish in third. I certainly hope our pitching can turn it around, but I no longer see it as a sure thing.
