A headline in the online edition of the Detroit Free Press says that because the AL won the All-Star game:

Tigers to Open Series at Home

That could be, might be, possibly a little premature.

I liked it. Nothing wrong with talking a little smack. Sure, it's premature and unlikely, but why not? Also, good bulletin-board material for the Sox. Better than the dark clouds that permeate mainstream Chicago media.

This is 100% correct. The Tigers will open the series at home. At their homes in FL, NV, MI etc...

I can't imagine that this paper meant for this title to come off in that manner. The article mentions nothing about the Tigers even possibly making the World Series. it focuses only on the all-star game.

But yeah, I laughed when I read it.

I think they did. Notice that it is "Tigers to open Series at home" and that the word "Series" is capitalized (only other cap'd word than Tigers). You wouldn't capitalize that word for a series against KC. They're referring to the big one in October.

I agree. The story mentions that with the win, the AL gets home advantage in the World Series.

It looks like a headline writer let his enthusiasm for the Tigers get the best of good judgment.

Pretty dumb to be giving teams like the Sox, Red Cubs, NYY and Twinkies bulletin board material. I hope the media makes a stink about it. Put the focus [pressure] on the Tigers and let us work our way to a 5+ game division lead in early September. When I saw that at the All-Star break last year we had an 11 game lead on Cleveland, it reminded me of how much baseball is left to be played - a lot!

Frankly Missing

I don't blame the writer for being a hopeful homey.

I bet Detroit is the only team watching the standings. We know it's way too early for that.

Anything can happen. The Twins might win it all.

The only thing I'm sure of is that the White Sox will play hard and give it their best shot in a very tough division.

Correct. Several Sox players have said they look to see what Detroit does on a daily basis. Everyone does it. It's whether you let it negatively impact you that matters.

I agree 100% with the title of this thread for one reason... reading through some of the posts on the MotownSports site, you will notice the cockiness of the fans/posters (with a few exceptions). The Tigers have sucked for a LONG time and this year they win some games and now think their **** doesn't stink. Too bad they haven't won a damn thing yet, it's July 12th.

I hope that we at WSI don't look so arrogant and confused with our posts. See here:

You guys realize that the Detroit Tigers are the ones playing the games, not the media. What the media says with their headlines really has no bearing on the outcome of the game. The Tigers didn't write the headlines.

DaleJRFan, fans are passionate. They say silly things. That's the whole point. That's why this site's slogan at the top is "Totally biased". You could have a group of 30 fans and 10 of them could be very good, 10 of them so so, and 10 ignorant and only the ignorant ones get noticed by people. I see just as many cocky things written here.

Bulletin Board material shouldn't come from what the media says. The media are not the ones playing the game.

I don't like Chisux either. Not because it's offensive but because it's not funny. To quote Jerry Seinfeld "It offends me as a comedian".

The only team name I saw recently that made me laugh was when someone hwere called the Red Sox "Red Cubs" or something like that.

Didn't the Boston Globe after game six of the 1967 World Series print a gigantic headline that said "Lonborg and Champagne?" (referring to their ace pitcher Jim Lonborg). Bob Gibson allegedly read the headline and immediately stuck it to Boston the following afternoon!

For the Tigers - like last year's Sox - the easy part is being the HUNTER. The hard part is being the HUNTED. If a year ago doesn't give folks around here perspective, I don't know what will. A year ago we swept Cleveland to go 15 games up on them only to sweat out the final 2 weeks of the season. We'll find out soon enough.

Whiney Sux fans have a history of violence. They are bitter, senile fans who have no grasp of reality. Jay Mariotti said it best in an interview on Chicago Tonight that you can hear on JaytheJoke.com about how White Sox fans are an angry fanbase which is true. They are very insecure and angry people. You couldn't have a conversation with them. I know I can't and I am glad I don't.

There is a reason why White Sox fans outnumber Twins fans at the Metrodome. Twins fans worry about their lives with White Sox fans at the game. I know one Twins fan got stabbed in the back in a knife once by a White Sox fan at the Metrodome. I would never go to a game at the Dome when the White Sox are in town considering I would fear for my life.

Guess who is trolling there. He got whacked here, so he had to go to another AL Central team. WSI: The preferred choice for AL Central Rival trolls.

Motown Kitty fans,

I'd like to make these 4 points as a biased White Sox fan:

1.Todd Jones is your closer?? With an ERA over 5?!?!
Good friggin' luck in the second half!!

2.Your "hero" Kenny Rogers has an alarming habit of sucking wind
and not winning "the big game" in the second half, not to mention
horrible post-season numbers.

3.How healthy can "Gagglio", "I-Rod" and Carlos Guillen stay
in the second half?? If one of them goes on the DL,can you tread
water until they return??

4.The Kitties and White Sox have similar schedules in the second half.
Both teams have many games left with the team nobody in the A.L.
wants to face, the Twins. Can you beat Santana and Liriano multiple
times ?? We'll see.And what about your starting rotation??
Can they hold up in the heat of August and September??
Once again,we'll see.

Some replies:

1. Todd Jones was our closer through the first half. We still have the best record in baseball. Most of that high ERA came from non save situations in which he was shelled. He hasn't blown a save in over a month.

2. True. But he has already been our worst starter over the past few weeks.

3. Of course I think they could tread water without them one of these guys. They are winning because of their pitching.

4. They already beat Santana and roughed up Liriano. Not to say it will happen again, but you guys assume you'll keep beating the Tigers at a 5 to 1 pace because it already happened once so.....

What a crybaby that "Timberwolf" on that motown sports board is! Your going to make a big deal about someone being stabbed at a game??

Geez, what's next? Are you going to start complaining about someone spilling beer on you, or the restroom lines being too long?

Stabbing someone is a part of the game, it always has been. I remember my grandfather telling me that back in his day, stabbing someone at a game was a sign of respect.

My father used to wear a belt to games that had loops for holding various knives.

You would think that this "Timberwolf" has never been to a baseball game in his life! Stabbing someone at a baseball game is as much of a tradition as the 7th inning stretch. Talk about looking for something to complain about! I mean, for god's sake, I have stabbed 93 people at games so far this year, and I in turn have been stabbed about 50 times.

If there ever comes a day where they stop letting people into the stadium with knives, then I just can't imagine going to a game anymore. I mean, what's the point??

1. If you cannot admit Jones blows then you're lucky that you're not their GM.

2. The Gambler will fall far short of his 1st half numbers. I will admit, although he didn't show it tonight, that Bonderman will be better in the 2nd half. You need to worry about 3-5.

3. To think that the pitching will be the same is sticking your head in the sand.

4. Good luck of that happening again.

All that said, I think the Tigers will stay around. Zumaya will probably move to the closer. He may handle it and may not, but I think you'll be fine. Your team needs to make a move for another quality SP and a LH bat.....Without that, and without injuries, the Tigers will not finish ahead of the Sox. Your team does need to make a move to make sure they at least get the wildcard because I have doubts that your current club will make it considering the 'pending' moves of the Yankmees....All IMO, of course.

1) We all know Todd Jones sucks. I don't like him as our closer, but he hasn't blown a save recently. I guess Leyland gave him a chewing.

2) Even if it does happen, and the Tigers play .500 ball, its still 96 wins. I'll take it.

3) It won't be the same, but what makes you think the arms are going to fall off the pitcher's body? You make it sound like the Tigers' pitchers are all robots with time bombs, waiting to implode...or explode.

4) Oh, why thank you!

1. So I guess the Tigerland is A-OK with the closer situation.

2. You may take it to the golf course. I'll agree that 96 wins gets the wildcard, but I don't think the Tigers will get 96 wins without an upgrade.

3. I'm not saying their arms will fall off, but their ERA will rise by a run in the 2nd half without a move (IMO).

4. No problem, but i doubt it will help. It will be interesting how the rotations fall. It'll be interesting how many times the Sox/Tigers face Santana/Liriano in the 2nd half....depending on moves, it could be a difference maker.
