Whoot!

Per MLB and White Sox.com, our favorite guy to get punched might be making the trip to Pittisburgh next week. I'm sure there are a few of us who have hit that "vote again" button, but come on folks! Let's not let AJ down! If you've got the time, he needs the votes!

Punch AJ, as many times as you can!!!

They announced Podsednik's All-Star berth as the Sox were taking the field in the top of the third or fourth last year, so you should hear something at the game tonight, I would think.

It's not over yet. And are you talking about Pablo Ozuna? He's a utility player, and he doesn't play everyday, therefore, how can you consider him an All-Star? The guy is having a great year for us, but don't get out of hand and think he's All-Star caliber.

What is the record for players for one team going to the same allstar game? anyone know? 7 is a big number, maybe we'll get a magazine cover or video game cover for this. I mean if the World Series wasn't enough, 7 allstars should be right?

This "vote the last guy on" thing is the ONLY good thing about the All Star selection process, I think. And I loved the Sox ad campaign. I wish MLB would do away with fan voting or make it much less important in the main selections. Pudge Rodriquez chosen ahead of Joe Mauer or AJ? Gimme a break.

I am pretty sure the A's of the early 70's sent that many or more to the game one year. There was a point where almost everyone on the field was wearing yellow and green.

In the NFL, the Steelers of the 70's once sent 9 defensive players to the game. At one point they were all on the field and they start calling defensive signals from their playbook. One of the other two players said, "what do we do" The reply was "Stay out of our way."

Like it or not, life is a giant popularity contest. Whether you agree or not is irrelevant. It is what it is. Did I vote for my favorites, you bet. Were there others that should have gone and didn't? Yes. Does this happen in life? Yes, every stinkin' minute of the hour, of the day, of the year.

It's like I tell my kids, life is not fair. No one told you it was, and if they did, they were lying.

How do you get away from this? Simple answer, you don't. Managers have biases, players have biases, fans have biases, owners have pockets. WHo do you let vote? ESPN? Sportswriters? Just look at what happens with the HOF, different story, but the same conclusion.

This is not a rip on you, per say, but rather a commentary on the state of affairs, and how you might go about fixing it.

There's three ways to vote for the ASG...
1. Vote on complete merit (this is difficult to do if a hardcore fan of one team).
2. Vote based both on your team and merit.
3. Be a complete homer.

I'd like to think the people here (and everywhere) use some form of 1 or 2.

Sorry, despite how insulting the asg is as for "best player goes" I do vote for the BEST player, not who i like. I also fill out the NL ballot and if the cubs have a good player at the position of choice, i vote for them.

Voting for Anderson over the plethora of outfielders in the AL is wrong and a wasted vote. Much like everyone voting manny ramirez when he never plays the asg but he is one of the best left fielders in the game and deserves the votes

I didn't vote for Brian because I don't think he's "All-Star" material yet.

I have watched AJ give 110% in every single game, even when the rest of the team was half asleep. He's a damn good catcher and having a good year offensively as well...and how long was that errorless streak? And yet people here of all places feel he doesn't deserve it.

This vote has been a welcome diversion to one of the worst weeks of my life. I was going to be up all night anyway, I appreciate everything AJ has done for this team, so I punched all night long twice and racked up 1000's.

MLB could easily decide that players with the best ERA, batting average, most RBI's, etc., would automatically play in the ASG. I wouldn't have a problem with that. However, leaving the vote up to the fans makes it a "subjective" vote. That means it pretty much boils down to a popularity contest.

I'm sure that very few people outside of our fanbase voted for AJ. Therefore, everyone who took the time to Punch AJ deserves to feel proud of what they accomplished. I'm truly awestruck by the desire, determination and dedication of Sox fans, and the sheer strength of our numbers to do what we did today.

I especially applaud those fans who went above and beyond the call of duty, threw caution to the wind, and voted long, hard, and continuously to get the job done. Thanks Sox fans. This was an experience I'll never forget.

Last year I heard every excuse in the book from the naysayers that refused to give credit to the Sox fan base for getts Pods in.

1) Two yankees splitting votes
2) RED Sox fans voted in Pods to keep a yankee from winning
3) Reindsdorf hired people to vote for Pods
4) Most fans hate the Yankees and voted against them

None of those excuses apply this year. If anything, AJ "should" have lost as he's the "most hated man in the game"

Even Buehrle expressed doubt AJ could win it because so many opposing fans hate him

Like I said in the other thread, this is the 2nd year in a row in which both guys I voted for won, so I'm taking full credit.

Unlike others, I have no clue how many times I voted. I did count up to 100 votes the other day and found that it took me 12 minutes. However, then I found out about copying and pasting the validation key this morning. With the ability to copy and paste it in quickly, and my mouse having a back button on the left side, I was at about 4 seconds a vote for a while today. Then I started having problems getting the copy and paste thing to work so I had to go back to typing which increased my time to about 6-7 seconds a vote.

The Sox have never lost the World Series in a year in which a Sox player was voted into the All Star game as the 32nd man.:D::bandance:

BTW, I'm still voting. I left the window up and I'm still getting the voting window refreshing and new validation keys. :D:

Why Liriano? If there was one guy on the ballot that should have been in the game, it was Hafner, as much as I dislike him. Liriano hasn't started the whole season, how does that qualify for the All Star game? Liriano is great, and he will be great in years to come, but IMHO, he didn't deserve to go this year. The al has ortiz, konerko and thome whom 2 of the 3 will platoon\ph the game. With aj, it leaves the AL with 3 catchers, of which 2 of the 3 will platoon and one will ph for the pitcher. How does three catchers help, what team now a days even has three catchers?

And if u wanna discuss work ethic, wheres david eckstein?

Well, the majority of voting is still done by middle schoolers and early HS students after they become old enough for on-line activities and learn enough about the game but before they become "too cool" to do that kind of childish thing.

Kids tend to be fans of their local team and players.

How many of those in your bracket u list inhabit this site?

AJ rules.

We rule.

I cannot express how proud I, again, am of my White Sox army.

Btw, it's bull**** that everybody is just conceding that other guys were more deserving. I voted for AJ because I'm a Sox fan, but he was also the most deserving. Liriano has started for half of a half of a season. Hafner is the fourth best 1B in the AL (if we count Ortiz and Thome).

Hafner has the highest avg, slug percentage and OPS for 1b

If u wanna argue about hafner playin 1b, thome doesnt play 1b yet he was let in.

Thome at least played 1b for the majority career.

Career Games at 1B
Hafner: 61
Thome: 1100
Ortiz: 229
Konerko: 1012

Games at 1B Since 2001:
Hafner: 61
Thome:621
Ortiz: 119
Konerko: 766

Edit: My point is that I have no problem with DHs going to the ASGame as a position player IF they actually played there for quite some time. Vote Frank in as a 1B. He was, at one point, a 1B. So was Thome. Heck, if Manny turns into a DH later in his career, vote him in the outfield. I'm fine with that, at least he played there.

>>Lastly, to all of you "fans" who wouldn't vote for our guy because "he wasn't the most deserving," how do you like what the rest of us managed to do without you?[/QUOTE]<<

"Most deserving" is for baseball purists and people who don't have a team. If you're a fan, you vote your guy; pure and simple.

Think the wife and I combined for about 150, give or take a few. Oh, and thanks to WSI! This is where the inspiration came from and this is where I found the link.

:beer

...because we're all in this together.

( Don't know why the quote wouldn't work this time. Probably has something to do with the neverending caprices of AOL. )

Thanks for punching AJ and giving us a great campaign slogan! Im sure the PR dept could have come up with something interesting but "Punch AJ" is classic.

It's amazing what a team without a fan base the size of the Attendance Champion Cubs can do to get the most hated man in baseball into the allstar game... Congrats to all!

I don't make a habit of reading mlb.com boards but I went to the Cubs board and I find it hilarious that some of them think that having AJ on the team makes the AL weaker. A few said that's why they voted for him. :?:

Yeah, and the AL needs to be as weak as possible, so that the Cubs can get home field advantage in the World Series. :roflmao:

LOL - I did that too last night after a few drinks while watching the game at home. Boy, was that a mistake. I shouldn't go out to those sites (Motown and Northside Baseball), as it took all I had not respond to some of the moronic posts.

Mike Greenberg on ESPN Radio this morning said that while AJ did get the last spot on the AL team, there has to be some way to get Liriano on the team. He said it's not that Pierzynski didn't deserve it, but...

If the last catcher on the AL team were Posada or Varitek, however, then everything would be cool.

Anyway, glad the 50-some votes I cast from work yesterday helped Pierzynski make it.

Does he deserve to be in Pittsburgh? No doubt.

Well, what team usually replaces their catcher in the middle of the game? The AL has to play both (now three) catchers.

Kinda makes you wonder whether all this unpopular stuff is on the up and up, a figment of the presses imagination. Other than one pitcher in SF, no one in uniform has ever openly come out against AJ.
The vote shows love for AJ, even if it mostly came from Chicago. If there was so much hate, why didn't they try to make a difference.
GO AJ, enjoy the All Star experience!

A lot of the people complaining either couldn't be bothered to actually vote, or were stupid about it. Before the vote was closed, I checked out a few different team sites. People who hated AJ (and there were many) were usually splitting their votes among the other choices. Many times I read "I voted xx times for Liriano, and xx times for Hafner". Had they concentrated their votes on one player, they might have helped that guy out.

And that explains the result, in a nutshell. The effort to vote against someone can never be as well coordinated or as passionate as the effort to vote for someone.

I just don't know what to do with myself now. The last few days had been devoted almost totally to punching AJ over and over again. Now there's an emptiness. I sit staring at the comptuer screen with no reason to keep looking at it. Life is meaningless without those little validation codes...those codes were validating me!

Anyone else suffering from PAJVH (Post AJ-Voting Hangover)?

I woke up this morning, came down to the computer and expected to get a good 30-40 mins of voting in before I did anything else. Took me a couple seconds to remember it was over.

The gamefaqs mlb board (The biggest Sox hating board I think I have ever seen) is going absolutely crazy. They are bashing Ozzie, Aj, and the Sox big time. I am the Sox defender around there and highly recommended this board to other Sox fans. I told them all the time they spend crying about AJ they couldv'e spent voting for their favorite player like we did. Haha. CONGRATS AJ! GO SOX! BEAT THE stupid Redsox.

Thome was voted in by the players. Obviously their peers in the game thought Jim was more deserving. Ozzie really didn't have much of a choice but to take Konerko over Hafner for defensive reasons with Thome and Ortiz already on the team. Who among Hafner, Thome, and Ortiz would YOU want playing 1B in the 8th and 9th innings of a tied game?

Can we just consider AJ not only the people's choice, but as a member of the World Champs; can we refer to him as "The People's Champion?"
