Dave Littlefield was named Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 13, 2001. Since then;
July 30, 2001 (Standings (http://www.baseball-reference.com/games/standings.cgi?date=2001-07-30)) Traded Jason Schmidt (http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/schmija01.shtml) and John Vander Wal (http://www.baseball-reference.com/v/vandejo02.shtml) to the San Francisco Giants (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/SFG/2001.shtml). Received Armando Rios (http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/riosar01.shtml) and Ryan Vogelsong (http://www.baseball-reference.com/v/vogelry01.shtml).
Vogelsong was just DFA today
March 27, 2002 Traded Damaso Marte (http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/marteda01.shtml) and Edwin Yan (minors) to the Chicago White Sox (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHW/2002.shtml). Received Matt Guerrier (http://www.baseball-reference.com/g/guerrma02.shtml).
November 25, 2002
Signed David Doster (http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/dosteda01.shtml) as a free agent. Traded players to be named later and Adrian Burnside (minors) to the Detroit Tigers (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/DET/2002.shtml). The Pittsburgh Pirates (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/PIT/2003.shtml) sent Roberto Novoa (http://www.baseball-reference.com/n/novoaro01.shtml) (December 16, 2002) and Kody Kirkland (minors) (May 24, 2003) to the Detroit Tigers (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/DET/2003.shtml) to complete the trade.
3 players for Randall Simon? Novoa was later used to get Farnsworth, who got the Tigers Miner and Colon.
December 20, 2002
Traded Chris Young (http://www.baseball-reference.com/y/youngch03.shtml) and Jon Searles (minors) to the Montreal Expos (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MON/2002.shtml). Received Matt Herges (http://www.baseball-reference.com/h/hergema01.shtml).
February 4, 2003 Bronson Arroyo (http://www.baseball-reference.com/a/arroybr01.shtml) selected by the Boston Red Sox (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2003.shtml) off waivers.
March 26, 2003 Released Matt Herges (http://www.baseball-reference.com/h/hergema01.shtml).
Gave away Chris Young for nothing
July 22, 2003 (Standings (http://www.baseball-reference.com/games/standings.cgi?date=2003-07-22)) Traded Mike Gonzalez (http://www.baseball-reference.com/g/gonzami02.shtml) and Scott Sauerbeck (http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/sauersc01.shtml) to the Boston Red Sox (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2003.shtml). Received Brandon Lyon (http://www.baseball-reference.com/l/lyonbr01.shtml) and Anastacio Martinez (http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/martian01.shtml).
Yes you read that correctly. Dave Littlebrain actually traded the Pirates' current closer to the Red Sox back in 2003.
July 23, 2003 (Standings (http://www.baseball-reference.com/games/standings.cgi?date=2003-07-23)) Traded Aramis Ramirez (http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/ramirar01.shtml), Kenny Lofton (http://www.baseball-reference.com/l/loftoke01.shtml), and cash to the Chicago Cubs (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHC/2003.shtml). Received a player to be named later, Jose Hernandez (http://www.baseball-reference.com/h/hernajo01.shtml), and Matt Bruback (minors). The Chicago Cubs (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHC/2003.shtml) sent Bobby Hill (http://www.baseball-reference.com/h/hillbo01.shtml) (August 15, 2003) to the Pittsburgh Pirates (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/PIT/2003.shtml) to complete the trade.
July 31, 2003 (Standings (http://www.baseball-reference.com/games/standings.cgi?date=2003-07-31)) Traded Brandon Lyon (http://www.baseball-reference.com/l/lyonbr01.shtml), Jeff Suppan (http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/suppaje01.shtml), and Anastacio Martinez (http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/martian01.shtml) to the Boston Red Sox (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2003.shtml). Received Mike Gonzalez (http://www.baseball-reference.com/g/gonzami02.shtml), Freddy Sanchez (http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/sanchfr01.shtml), and cash
I actually think Gonzalez was sent back due to one of the Red Sox guys fail a physical
November 20, 2003
Matt Guerrier (http://www.baseball-reference.com/g/guerrma02.shtml) selected by the Minnesota Twins (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/2003.shtml) off waivers. Duaner Sanchez (http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/sanchdu01.shtml) selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/LAD/2003.shtml) off waivers.
Guerrier has been ok for the Twins, but Sanchez has been good with the Mets
December 15, 2003
Chris Shelton (http://www.baseball-reference.com/s/sheltch01.shtml) drafted by the Detroit Tigers (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/DET/2003.shtml) in the 2003 rule V draft.
July 30, 2004 (Standings (http://www.baseball-reference.com/games/standings.cgi?date=2004-07-30)) Traded Kris Benson (http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/bensokr01.shtml) and Jeff Keppinger (http://www.baseball-reference.com/k/keppije01.shtml) to the New York Mets (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYM/2004.shtml). Received Jose Bautista (http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/bautijo02.shtml), Ty Wigginton (http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/wiggity01.shtml), and Matt Peterson (minors).
Got nothing in return for the former #1 overall pick. Who knows what they could've gotten from the Twins.
November 27, 2004 Traded Jason Kendall (http://www.baseball-reference.com/k/kendaja01.shtml) and cash to the Oakland Athletics (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/OAK/2004.shtml). Received Mark Redman (http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/redmama01.shtml), Arthur Rhodes (http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/rhodear01.shtml), and cash.
Traded the face of the franchise for pretty much nothing, but this turned out to be a crappy deal for both teams (more for the A's)
December 11, 2004 Traded Arthur Rhodes (http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/rhodear01.shtml) to the Cleveland Indians (http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CLE/2004.shtml). Received Matt Lawton (http://www.baseball-reference.com/l/lawtoma02.shtml).
Traded Lawton and CASH to their division "rivals" Cubs for Jody Gerut. Who has done NOTHING for the Pirates
Traded Redman for Jonah Bayliss (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7582) because they thought it was a good idea to pick up Sean Casey and his $8.5 million salary.
They gave the largest contract in their history for a free agent to Jeromy Burnitz for $6 million (how sad is that?) and he has been BRUTAL. They also gave $4 million to Joe Randa this year.
The second Marte trade isn't looking that great because he can't get out Lefties and he has a 1.45 WHIP.
Jason Bay-Brian Giles seems like a fair trade now that Oliver Perez sucks and isn't in the rotation, and he pulled a fast one on KW with Ritchie.
Conclusion; Littlefield sucks.
