ESPN baseball analyst Peter Gammons, 61, is undergoing surgery this afternoon for an aneurysm in his brain.
Gammons was stricken earlier today and was taken to a Boston-area hospital. He is expected to be in intensive care for the next 10 to 12 days.

Get well soon. His Red Sox homerism can be a little much, but his analysis and ability to string together a coherent thought that shows actually research and desire to know about the game are the only bright spots on ESPN baseball telecasts.

It is no secret that Gammons was crying on the field at Busch Stadium when Boston won it in 2004 but there was a reason. Peter has told the story that his fathers dying words to him were "you will see the Red Sox win".
When Peter worked at the Boston Globe he was brutal on the front office and the stupid moves they made ( Carlton Fisk for starters )
But the man truly loves baseball. I have seen him at Pawtucket, Lowell, Portland, Cape Cod League games and even Boston Park League games. Hopefully he comes out of this unscathed.
ESPN is reporting he was was at his summer home on the Cape and was Medflighted to Boston :o: The rest of the article reads like an obit :shudder:

Get well soon, and thanks again for signing my ticket last year at Game 1 of the WS. He was very nice to invite me up to the BT set during the game. Very nice man. My thoughts and prayers go out to you

I've always enjoyed Gammons due to the fact that he shows a geniune love for the game. Most analyst today are ex-players who are seemingly in love with their own vioce, spewing out stats they read minutes before game time and offering truely useless opinions.
I'm looking at you, Jeff Brantley.
Gammons is a true original - and he picked the White Sox over the Red Sox prior to the start of the ALDS so his bias can't be that bad....

I realize most people aren't huge Gammons fans (im not either) but I would never wish this kind of thing upon anyone. Prayers for him and I hope everything comes out okay and he can return to watching a sport he obviously truly loves.

It depends on how bad it is and where in your brain it is. Like I said in an earlier post, my father had one and he did not die, although he came about as close as you can come.
They had to do emergency brain surgery to save his life. I don't have any hard numbers or anything, but many people die from aneyrysms, not just one's in your brain, but any of your bodies blood vessels.

Depends upon where it is and how quickly they get to it.

You can live with an 'aneurysm'. An aneurysm, by definition, is simply a bulge in a blood vessel, like a balloon. They indicate a weakening in the vessel wall, and can occur in arteries or veins.
The problem arises when they rupture. Arterial aneurysms are obviously much more dangerous because they are in high-pressure vessels. If detected before rupture, oftentimes they can be 'clamped' or repaired.
Another area in which ruptured aneurysms can be fatal are in the abdominal Aorta (http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4455).

I'm praying for the guy. Yes, he's a Red Sox homer but frankly don't you think we'd all be White Sox homers a little bit? I remember vividly how much he loved that early 1990's White Sox team. He rountinely predicted them to win. The '94 season was to prove him right. Too bad they never had the chance. He also said warm things about the Sox. God speed.

A few years ago, my sister was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm.
Fortunately, it was found to be in a vein and not an artery. After consulting with a neurosurgeon, she was told that she was at very low risk and surgery was not recommended. There would have been more risk with surgery than to just leave it alone.
They also told her that if it were to rupture, it was in an area of the brain which controlled 'social graces'. To which, being the wonderful brother that I am, I asked: how would we ever know the difference? :redneck

Boston Gammons takes a lot of flack on this board for his crappy predicting and east coast bias, but very sad to hear he had an aneurysm and is in bad shape. Get well PG.

I'm not ashamed to admit this, but I always looked forward to hearing from Peter Gammons on ESPN.
To me, he is one of the few bright spots during ESPN baseball broadcasts and baseball tonite. I think he is insightful, smart, and he just flat-out knows and loves baseball. I always respect his opinion and all of his "baseball wisdom".
He is one of the only, if not the only person with true baseball knowledge on ESPN. I don't want to go off on a rant about the other garbage they have covering baseball and sports in general on ESPN.
I know that most people's biggest complaint (and mine too.) about Peter Gammons is that he was too much of a "Red Sox Homer" on ESPN. But, if you think about it, if by some miracle any one of the die-hard White Sox fans here on WSI suddenly got to become an analyst for ESPN you could bet that we would all favor our Chicago White Sox in broadcasts.
Best wishes to Peter and his family. I hope he pulls through this.
Here's hoping he pulls through.
Even with his at times blinding love for the Red Sox he's a great analyst.

That's what I was thinking. I was REALLY surprised when I read 61 years old, that's only 4 years older than my Dad and they look years apart. My guess would have been in the mid 70's. I guess some people just age faster. Haven't really heard any new information except that Gammons is recovering in a hospital... hopefully we know within a couple days exactly what kind of shape he is in.. hoping for the best!

OK, so Gammons has a soft spot for the Red Sox. As a lifelong New Englander, he certainly has that right and I thus never really faulted him when it sometimes showed at ESPN. I've always found him to be intelligent, informed and restrained. Hope he's back at 100% soon.
I hope that he is ok. Even though I think that his homerism for the Red Sox is tiresome, he truly loves baseball and is very intelligent.
Prayers for him and his family.

Peter seems like a really great guy who loves what he does for a living. He has always been classy and professional in the way that he goes about doing his job. He's the best at it. I pray that he makes a full recovery from this.

I agree, good luck Peter.
He's the only guy on ESPN I can stand, so I"m hoping he's back for many years of White Sox baseball on ESPN.
The only way the Sox get on ESPN games, is after a championship, you see.
All kidding aside, I hate to see that happen to anyone.

Peter is listed in GOOD condition at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and his wife told WEEI he is alert and watching baseball in the ICU unit there. They were able to make the repair in his brain before it ruptured so chances for a full recovery are excellent

Anymore news on Peter Gammons lately? Is he still doing well?
There was an update this afternoon on the Boston Globe's website.
There has been improvement “in both his motor skills and cognitive ability.”
your guess is as good as mine what that means since we don't know what if any damage occured to Peter.
